This got worse by the minute.

If she admitted that she’d been angry at her people since being brought into Krol’s castle, she and Bosse would be right back where they were twenty minutes ago.

She could not wound him all over again. She also might fold and say she’d go with him, which couldn’t happen now. She would not put her happiness over Rez’s safety.

Chapter 28

Bosse told Alifair, “Stay here. I’ll be back quickly.”

Not wanting to hear more, he opened the door to check the hallway in both directions before slipping out. He’d put on his soft-bottom shoes and walked quietly across the wide-paneled wood floor to the bedroom with the window.

His insides warred with trying to decide if he had been used yet again. He had little experience with honest people. Adrian and the Gallize shifters treated him fairly, even if he now served a purpose for them. Had he not put his foot down, they would have come without him to find Magdelina.

He understood that with no problem. They’d been honest with him from the start, just as he had been honest with them.

What about Alifair?

Women had deceived him before. He questioned this deep need he felt for Alifair and how he might be blind to her ways. She had magic and had tricked the guards into sleeping the night she came to free him. She was clearly desperate to save her friend and had known he’d return at some point if he were the one to save Rez.

Had she been using him? Was that why she had been so nice to him? Was that why she opened her body to him?

Just thinking that felt as if he betrayed her.

His mind banged around, confused. He wanted Alifair and was determined to keep her safe, but could he force her to go with him? Should that be necessary?

He put his hand on the doorknob when Titan spoke up.Has she lied to you?

Bosse paused to think on all she’d said. No, but you were the one who said she told the truth while keeping something hidden. That is lying by omission.

True.

If not for needing to get this message out ahead of daylight, which he believed would come in about two hours, he’d have continued the conversation with Titan.

Hurrying over to the window, he searched for guards below. Krol mainly wanted the front gate secured, having no concern about someone scaling the tall walls on the sides.

He had one chance to get this to Adrian’s group.
