Calming himself with several long breaths, he flicked the message out the window the way Adrian had made him practice on the way here.

The tiny gliding paper sailed higher than he expected. Would it land in tree branches?

As it crossed over the wall, the triangle-shaped paper arced down, landing on the ground but out of Bosse’s sight. He saw no one emerge from the tree line, but neither had he expected that bunch to expose their presence.

His message had been short to fit on the paper:

I have a way to find the mate. Not enough space to explain. I can’t get out of here without help. The castle sleeps. You can attack as soon as fifteen minutes after finding this. I will be ready on the inside.

That would give Adrian’s men the advantage of surprise and darkness.

Bosse would likely not be as lucky since the guards inside carried titanium ammo and arrows, but he would do his part.

Chapter 29

By the time Bosse returnedto the room, Alifair had gone through a flurry of emotions, from trying to convince him he was wrong to surprise at his reaction to feeling annoyed that he couldn’t hear how much she cared about him.

Now she waited to see if he’d come to his senses.

Bosse closed the door behind him and faced her. He’d always appeared confident about what he was going to do, unlike now when he stared at the floor.

She refused to say another word until he figured out that, yes, she originally came to him because he could help, but she’d been watching him for weeks. She’d gotten to know him long before they talked.

Then he had done the one thing she hadn’t expected.

When she’d tried to hurry him out of the castle, he refused to go without her. A man who had been caged for years hesitated to escape. He’d been adamant about not leaving her behind. She hadn’t realized until that moment how much she needed to know someone thought her life was important.

That she should come first.

She’d made up her mind that night to help him escape even while doubting he could return to help Rez after reaching America. Then he’d burrowed into her heart with that one action. Any other prisoner who could escape would have left her in their dust without a second thought.

Bosse had lived this hell for twenty-four long months, day in and day out, yet he struggled to convince her to go with him. When she told him he’d put her in danger, he said he’d find her in America.

That was a man of integrity she’d never known.

How could she reach him so he wouldn’t leave here angry with her?
