Chapter 30

Bosse had never beenaround shifters like these. How had Vic used his mind to strike pain in the still-keening guard?

Eriko, Krol’s arrogant lead guard, began to tremble. “I’ll talk.”

Vic shifted his stance to be even cockier. “Yeah, I thought so.”

Adrian started hammering Eriko with questions. “What is Krol doing with those two women?”

“He didn’t tell me,” Eriko replied, then quickly added, “But he said he was going to Košice for temporary guards called wilkotauks to take on his trip. Said he would not bring the wilkotauks with him when he returned in three to five days.”

“What are wilkotauks?”

“Powerful werewolves. Assassins.”

Adrian smirked. “Powerful compared to what?”

“I’ve never seen one. I just heard they are witch-born.”

That sounded challenging, but Adrian and his people were Gallize. Bosse asked, “Why does he need assassin werewolves?”

Alifair offered, “Does it have to do with that Lammogo thing?”

Eriko almost hesitated but took one look at Vic and kept talking. “Krol recently made a trip and came back with the Lammogo. I think he owes something to the person who gave him the pet. I’m only guessing, but it might involve using the pregnant woman in trade because he took the Lammogo with him and brought her back. Whoever made that flying creature must have strong magic. Krol probably does not trust him.”

“Where is he meeting that person?”

Eriko just lifted his shoulders.

Vic snapped his fingers in front of Eriko’s face.

The guard clutched his head and cried out, “Stop! My head will explode.Stop!”

Once the guard calmed down, Vic said, “That is the only nudge you’ll get. The next delay will result in major pain.”

Red flooded Eriko’s face. He breathed as if his lungs were quitting on him. “Please don’t hurt me. I don’t know where that meeting will happen, only where he’s headed to get the wilkotauks. I’ll draw you a map to the estate, which is hidden from the road.”

Justin walked up wearing clothes similar to Bosse’s. He dug out a pen and paper, handing it to Krol’s right-hand man.

Eriko’s hand shook as he drew the map. He told them, “Krol can’t use the major highway because the women are in a horse-drawn wagon. It looks like a gypsy drifter. These are the trails he’ll have to use.” He added some lines that paralleled the highways vehicles used most of the time, allowing Krol to avoid being on public roads.

Adrian stood and cast a look around the main hall. “We need somewhere to put them until a team can get here.”

Alifair asked, “What about the female servants? They’re innocent in all this and are probably hiding in their rooms.”
