The other one, he now knew as Rez, had been captured a month ago based on a tip he’d received. He’d offered money for any unusual woman and double if she had been observed using her gifts.
Since being locked away in his tower room, Rez had said not a word until she called his black-haired kitchen maid with two different eye colors Alifair.
That maid had fooled everyone.
He would have to do a better job of interrogating servants in the future, but it had never occurred to him that some foolish woman would intentionally get caught to serve inside his castle.
Rez lifted her chin. Her brown eyes had deep shadows beneath them. He’d gone by every night he was in the castle and rattled the door to her room, thinking to shake her up enough to speak.
He would do far worse to make Alifair regret having hunted him.
Stepping over to the back of the wagon, he said, “I will return soon. I suggest you both behave as Jothan rules this place and will not be as nice as me if you cross him.”
Rez frowned and flicked her gaze away as if he bored her. He should take time on the way back to make her pay for the insolence since no deal had been struck for her yet.
Magdelina never took her steely eyes off his face. Her lips twitched with the start of a smile.
He would like to give that one a lesson in obedience, too, but he had to deliver her unscathed. She’d infuriated him so much that he wasn’t sure he could stop once he started in on her.
Rez was a bonus he might be able to trade to the mage for one more request.
She didn’t have to show up in perfect condition.
“Enjoy your moment, bitches. It will not last long.” Then he climbed out.
Chapter 34
Amate.
Alifair hadn’t been upset, just curious about Bosse claiming her as his. In fact, she’d loved the idea of being a mate, especially his, but felt he should have at least discussed it with her.
Especially after she’d agreed to leave the castle with him. After her dream about where Rez and Magdelina were going, she couldn’t argue for staying at the castle.
Bosse had tried to smooth over what he’d said about mating by stating, “I did not mean it to sound like an order.”
“I’m not saying you ordered me, but it’s the first I’ve heard of being a mate,” she’d explained, trying not to sound irritated. He had to learn to discuss what sounded like a major decision with her.
