Chapter 51
While Adrian and thatmage argued, Alifair begged the universe to keep Bosse alive. “Don’t close your eyes, Bosse.”
His eyes remained shut. He barely breathed.
The sickening smell of fresh and dried blood clouded the air. She held her middle with one hand, but nothing could stave off the agony of being torn open. Sweat burned her eyes. Ignoring everything except Bosse, she had to touch him. Straining, she dragged herself the last ten inches until her fingers touched his outstretched hand.
“Please... don’t... die,” Alifair pleaded with what voice she had left.
His eyes fluttered open. He sounded disoriented when he whispered, “Mate.”
Just hearing that word gutted her. She hadn’t expected him to die, just her. How could she have failed him this way?
His eyes opened again. “I’m sorry. I wanted... more... time with you, love.”
She couldn’t stop her sobbing. Using what energy she could call up, she dug her nails in, clawing closer to touch his face.
His eyebrows lifted, then dropped back into place.
Rez shouted, “Alifair, free us so we can come to you.”
Alifair hadn’t realized she’d pinned her two friends in the woods. She didn’t want to waste a breath she needed for Bosse, but she’d sacrificed everything, even him, to save Rez and Magdelina. Lifting her head, she called out four words in a rattling breath to break the spell and hoped it worked.
She tasted blood that trickled out of her mouth.
It wouldn’t be long now.
Rez and Magdelina showed up fast and knelt on each side of her. Rez took her hand to hold, and Magdelina brushed the hair off her face. Rez asked, “What can we do?”
Adrian rushed up and shouted, “Magdelina, are you both safe?”
“Yes. We’re fine, but they need a healer.”
“Shit fire, you both look bad.” Adrian squatted next to Alifair.
A rush of hope pumped through her. She rasped out, “Can you heal Bosse? Please. Do something.”
Adrian sounded heartbroken when he replied, “I don’t have supernatural healing ability, and neither does Justin. My mate might be able to save you both.”
“Where is she?” Alifair asked.
“Back home in the US.”
Bosse stirred to life. His eyes unfocused when he said, “Titan warns. Shifters coming. Many. Protect... my mate.”
Adrian jumped up and turned to hunt for the shifters he now smelled. “Shit fire! Justin, watch your back!”
Sick at not being able to do a thing to help Bosse, Alifair hurt thinking about what they might have had. She didn’t care what her clan would have thought of her choosing a wolf shifter. This was the man of her heart.
Bosse deserved to live out his life free, not die in this place. She touched his face.
His trembling fingers stroked her hair. “I love you... forever.”
She cried even harder at that and gulped a breath. She would do her best to ease his struggle. “You have fought enough, my love. I will see you in the next world. Rest now.”
Magdelina, who had been so strong, cried a moment and then demanded, “Do not die!”
Alifair wanted to thank her even though Magdelina was no healer. She had a good heart. Rez shouted, “Do something. You have to save them.”
