“I have. He is an eagle shifter and looks to be maybe in his fifties, but I sensed that he is very old. Powerful, too. As I understand it, he is known as Guardian over the Gallize. Also, we must be careful not to talk about him or the Gallize. This is a secret group.”
A tap at the door sounded, and Alifair called out, “Come in.”
Jaz walked in, black hair scattered like the last time, but she had dark shadows under her eyes.
He tried to sit up.
Alifair went from sweet to in charge, warning him, “Don’t you dare screw up her additional healing. Ivo got us home, but she had a lot more work to do on you.” Then she whispered, “She scares me.”
Behind Alifair’s back, Jaz gave her a look for those last three words, then crossed her eyes and stuck her tongue out.
Bosse busted out a belly laugh, then groaned, regretting the move.
Alifair glared at him.
Jaz spoke with a light-hearted voice. “I hope you are not expecting me to heal you every few weeks going forward.”
Still aching from the laugh, Bosse said, “That makes two of us.”
“You need one or two days more of bed rest, but you should be able to sit at the table this evening to eat with us.”
Adrian pushed the door wider open and walked in, putting his arm around Jaz’s shoulders. He told Bosse, “You had us all worried once Ivo got Alifair healed. He said he could put more energy into her if he could stabilize you for the flight home. Otherwise, you would have to wait until later that evening for him to recover from being drained.”
Alifair mentioned, “I was just telling Bosse what happened after we both went dark on you.”
“Good,” Adrian replied, then told Alifair, “My boss said you’re welcome to take his jet when you’re ready.”
Bosse’s stomach twisted into one big knot. He waited for Adrian and Jaz to leave before he asked, “Are you abandoning me again?”
Chapter 53
Alifair gasped at thedisappointment in Bosse’s voice. He hadn’t been joking. He stared at her with hurt bleeding from his gaze.
She whispered, “That’s not fair. I was trying to save you last time.”
He pointed out, “You admit youareabandoning me. What is the reason this time? Are you returning to your people to wait on the next deadly task they assign you?”
