Did she have time to ponder that at this moment?
No.
She used the key from Cyrano’s ring and opened the cage door as quietly as possible. Before walking in, she looked to her right at the other cages on each side of the walkway deeper into the basement.
Nothing stirred.
Should she trust her spell? It had been a simple one. It should last three hours or more, which she figured would give her time to gain a bit of trust with Bosse and get him on his way. Also, to do it quietly, which required not making a mistake by rushing.
She’d originally intended only to share how she was working on Bosse’s escape plan when she came here tonight.
Krol had been livid when Bosse won the last fight. The castle lunatic’s announcement slashed the time she had for planning to nothing. Now she had to convince Bosse to escape immediately before she could accumulate enough information for a successful exit strategy, or there would be no freeing him or saving Rez.
For the first time since being here, she had two goals. One was Rez, but even if Bosse could not help Rez, he still deserved to escape.
Stop mentally meandering and get moving, she ordered her hesitant self.
Right. No plan allowed for cold feet.
“Fine,” she grumbled under her breath and opened the cage door, slipping inside. Keeping her voice down, she softly called out, “Bosse.” She waited, then again said, “Bosse.”
Still nothing. Didn’t wolf shifters have excellent hearing?
The wolf lifted his big head and turned to eye her. Wide jaws opened, exposing fangs she’d never seen this up close.
Her heart tried to beat its way out of her chest to save itself.
She froze. This had been a mistake. One she might not survive.
But her dream had picked a wolf shifter.Thiswolf shifter.
Shaking, she said, “Please don’t attack me. I hope you understand my words. I need, uh, the man part.”
Had the wolf smiled?
As she watched, the wolf began changing into the shape of a man. She could feel energy rolling across the cage. When the change finished, she was facing the front side of a muscular male body, complete with...
Heat flooded her face. She looked away. “Uh, please turn around.”
“You did say you wanted to see the man part,” he deadpanned.
He had to know she hadn’t meantthatpart, which was now burned into her mind. This place normally chilled her. Where had the rush of heat come from? Her cheeks had to be flaming.
Sounding as if he laughed, he said, “You’re safe to look now.”
She peeked a little. He was sitting up with his hands covering his private area. That reminded her of what she’d brought. But then she saw blood dried in spots and some still trickling down his side. “How badly are you hurt?”
“I’ll live. I think.” He kept his voice low.
“Show me.”
“Why are you here?” Then he looked around. “How’d you get in without waking anyone?”
“I put them to sleep. The more questions you ask, the less time you’ll have to escape.”
That wiped the smile away. “What are you talking about?”
She didn’t say a word, just gave him her I’m-in-no-mood-for-fools look.
