Another door opened, and the old guard, half-awake, stepped out, looking around the room. He yelled, “What’s going on?”
Krol turned sharply to him, glaring the man into silence. Then he swung back to the women and ordered, “Servants, back to your rooms. Do not leave until I send someone for you.”
One of the girls wailed, “What if that wolf gets in?”
Now, the castle ruler looked impatient. He waved her off. “Stop crying. All will be secured in the next hour.”
As soon as the first female turned to leave, Alifair fell into step right behind her. She hurried into her room and shut the door, then sat on the edge of the bed. Had she put Bosse at greater risk by helping him escape based on a plan with holes?
He would hate her for it.
She could live with that if he just survived.
If the guards and trackers caught Bosse, Krol would be merciless in dragging out his death.
What had gone wrong? Had something awakened a guard in the cage area, and he saw them leaving the dungeon?
No, that guard would have informed Krol immediately.
What about Beast?
She wasn’t entirely sure her magic would affect him, but he appeared sound asleep. Had her spell not worked on him, and he fooled her by pretending?
Could he talk or not?
She’d told Bosse he was out of time, but now she might be the one out of time. Panicked at the idea of Krol setting Bosse up to die today, she hadn’t thought this plan through enough at all. With the guards remaining in the castle on high alert, it would be even harder to slip away and hunt Rez, but she had to find Rez soon and free her.
If Alifair managed to do that, she would still have one more impossible task.
She had to get away from this castle before Krol discovered her role in both escapes.
