Chapter 11

Back in her room, frazzlednerves dissipated under a blanket of weariness. Alifair flopped on her bed, exhausted. She listened for any sound of Bosse’s voice. Every disastrous situation ran through her mind.

The longer silence reigned outside her door, the more oncoming fatigue forced her to close her eyes, but she fought sleep until she had to shut her eyes.

Just for a moment.

Her eyelids fluttered a couple of times.

She’d barely slept in three days for worrying and preparing. She hadn’t dreamed since the one fingering Bosse as the key to success. She had her doubts. If he did make it to the States, and she wanted that with all her being, how could he possibly come back to save Rez?

That left it up to Alifair, but she had yet to spot Rez in the castle.

She began mentally listing places she hadn’t been able to search yet while trying to stay awake.

Her eyelids got heavier. She was done.

Dropping deep into sleep, the next thing she knew, she was running through the castle, trying to find Bosse before anyone else did. Rain began falling, then driving down hard. How could that be going on inside the kitchen?

Dreams usually made more sense. She had no idea what was going on.

She wasn’t inside. The world had turned into a black void, brightened only by lightning. A wolf howled. She froze. Could that be Bosse’s wolf? No, he would keep quiet. She started running and struggled to find her way through oversized trees. Then the trees thinned out and opened to a large flat field.

Lightning popped and struck everywhere. Terrified, she ran across the field. How was she doing that when a turtle could outrun her?

A high-pitched scream yanked her around to look back.

Krol’s monster flew high up in the turbulent sky. If it caught her, it would kill her.

She ran across the field, and the fast-moving storm passed over her. As she looked back, the flying creature turned around and flew away. Thank goodness.

She couldn’t keep running. She was no athlete.

The wind swirled and spun. She was turning round and round until she floated in a tornado. When it stopped, she stood on a ledge thousands of feet in the air and screamed, backing away.

An arm wrapped around her body and lifted her off the ground.

She screamed again.

“Hush, it’s me.”

He sounded like Bosse. She calmed down and fought to catch her breath.

He’d stepped inside a cave and lowered her feet to touch the ground. “What are you doing here?”
