Eriko gave him a long look before saying, “Krol has determined that either someone who liked the wolf wanted to help him escape or someone who hated the wolf freed him just to be rid of another shifter.”

The guard’s face turned ashen. “I would never cross Krol. Besides, who likes any of those things in cages?”

“That is good to hear, but I will speak to everyone who was in this castle last night. Krol has told me to find the person behind this or face the consequences myself. I assureyouI will not accept failure.”

Stomach in a knot at that news, Alifair turned slowly to keep from dropping the dishes. Her whole body shook as she shuffled to the kitchen. What way did Eriko have to determine who told the truth or not?

He was not a shifter who could smell a lie.

He must have something up his sleeve to make such a bold statement.

Panic urged her to escape this minute, but she couldn’t leave without Rez first.

Chapter 12

Sunlight speared throughthe opening, waking Bosse. Why was he sitting up against a wall? Still sleepy, he called to his wolf.Titan?

I am here and ready. We are rested.

Bosse rubbed his shirt-covered back against the wall to ease the itching. Good sign that his skin had healed. Alifair’s stitches would rip free when he shifted, but he had healed better than he’d thought by now. He stood, and dizziness hit him.

Sitting on the ground again, he told Titan,We need food and water first.

The woman put food and a gourd in the bag.

Smart wolf. Bosse had to shake off his mental cobwebs. He dug inside the gray cloth bag to find rolls, meat jerky, a gourd of water, and... cookies. Of course.

He hadn’t smiled in two years, not a real smile that warmed his heart, but she managed to lighten his mood anywhere, even in his dreams.

What a dream that one was last night.

He paused. Hadn’t he been sleeping on the floor? How had he ended up sitting against the wall? He’d dreamed Alifair came to this cave, and he’d carried her over to the wall, where he sat down to dry her off. He did way more than that to her body. His cock stirred just thinking about the erotic dream he’d love to enjoy in real life.

That dream had been so real—more than he wanted to admit.

He muttered, “Stop being ridiculous.” He’d slept sitting against the wall in his cage at times when he had chest injuries. Nothing new there. That dream was born of the stress from escaping the castle and that Lammogo. Nothing else.
