Pay attention, he told himself.
Hessie ordered, “Let me see him.”
Bosse pulled the limp guard off his shoulder and lowered him to the floor. More of Krol’s men and servants gathered around, creating a decent-sized crowd.
Still no Alifair. Had she escaped already? He hoped so.
Now he understood why Vic had said things might change regardless of a plan.
“He is not waking,” Hessie groused as she slapped his face.
“I wouldn’t be hitting him,” the guard from outside warned. “If you’re the last one attending him and he dies, Krol will not be pleased.”
“Shut up,” Hessie muttered, but the guard had gotten her full attention. She stopped striking the unconscious man.
As everyone focused on the injured guard, Bosse backed away slowly and looked around. If Alifair were here, she would not be in the room under the stairs she’d told him about. She said it was small, and she did not like being in there.
His eyes strayed to the stairs that led down to the basement, torturing him with the horrors he’d suffered. He shook those memories off, reminding himself he was here to help the Gallize and save the most amazing woman he’d ever met.
He would do anything for Alifair.
Those dreams and his freedom had him rethinking his future. Alifair did not see him as the other shifters. He wanted the chance to prove he was better than a monster and to spend long days holding her... forever. Those were his dreams, which might never be if she only wanted to go home to her people without him once he had her safe.
Mate, Titan whispered in his mind.
Bosse couldn’t believe what Titan had said. What?
She is our mate. No other woman has made you so happy.
His wolf had never shown an interest in teaming up with a woman. She’s a human, Bosse argued, even though his foolish mind and heart believed he could make it work.
She is more than human. Then Titan ended the conversation when he said,We must hurry.
Bosse had to keep his head turned in the right direction, or this would all be for naught. Where could Alifair be?
With Krol gone, she might be searching for her friend.
Otherwise, she’d be in the middle of this group if she were nearby.
Bosse had to move quickly. He could come back down later to search the ground floor, but he needed to determine if he could get to any of the upstairs windows first before Krol returned.
Also, it seemed that Krol would keep the captured mate up there.
Taking soft steps, he backed away to the stairwell while keeping the crowd in sight. When he reached the stairs, he quietly took them two at a time while watching over his shoulder.
At the top landing, he began searching rooms for the Gallize mate and any available window.
The first three rooms were empty, one of which had to be Krol’s area. It had mechanical desk machines in it.
Why? The cage area guards often complained about not having mobile phones or internet service. That had made no sense to Bosse until he’d heard two caged shifters talking about how Krol had the perfectly hidden location being off the grid.
Krol might not be as much off the grid as he thought.
The fourth door was locked. He jiggled the door handle. No point in forcing his way in when two of the other rooms had windows.
Titan said, I smell lion shifter and guards.
Bosse stopped. He’d been told Krol was gone.Is Krol still here?
