No.

Still trying to get the injured man’s stink from his nose, Bosse waited for more details from his wolf.

Titan always had sharper senses than his and said,Another scent of frightened human. Not here either.

Bosse asked,Are the scents fresh or old?

Fresh.

Bosse couldn’t help his disappointment over not having found Alifair, even if he wanted her to be safe. He was so confused. So, no one is here?

Titan took a moment, then said,Not true. I hear someone breathing in the room.

What about a scent from that person?Bosse asked, already trying to figure out his next move.

No scent. Could be her.

Bosse’s heart skipped a beat. There was only oneherthat Titan would reference in this situation.

You mean Alifair, right?he clarified.

Maybe. She had no scent.

That sent his heart doing backflips at first, and then it tanked. If she were here, Bosse could think of only one reason she might be locked in a room. Krol had figured out that she’d helped him escape.

He took a deep breath and hoped Alifair was in there, not someone who might scream or shout an alarm. He tapped lightly. “Alifair.”

Soft footsteps ran to the door. “Yes?”

He dropped his head to the door, thankful to hear her voice but sick to know she’d been locked up. He should want her far from here, but if he had to choose between her being here at this moment and somewhere unknown, he’d take here.

“It’s me. Bosse.”

She started crying. “You are captured again?”

He smiled a real one. “No, I’m safe. Move away from the door. I’m coming in.”

He waited for a heartbeat, then wrenched the doorknob so hard it broke the locking mechanism. He yanked the bloody jacket off, not wanting to smell like that man, then opened the door and tossed the jacket into a corner.

Alifair in person was the only sight better than the vision of holding her in his dreams. She stared him up and down in confusion, then her eyes widened in shock, no doubt surprised at his change in appearance.

Before he could explain, she made a little squeal and ran for him, leaping up.

He caught her to him, swinging around, surprised every time this woman wanted to touch him. Blown away for her to be in his arms for real. Until she came along, he’d been resigned to living what worthless life he had left as a monster until something deadlier killed him one day.

Never to have anyone care if he lived or died.

She kissed his neck, then his face, then... he leaned down and met her lips. He could live in this moment for the rest of his life. Nothing had ever felt as welcoming as the way Alifair opened to him.

He explored her mouth, sweeping his tongue in to meet hers.

She made the sweetest sound of happiness.

He pulled his mouth away, and she moaned. “No, don’t stop. I never thought I’d get to do this before... ”

Grinning, he asked, “Before what, sweetness?”

She seemed lost in the moment and murmured, “Before I died.”
