Chapter 24
“What?” Bosse couldnot have heard Alifair correctly. Why couldn’t she leave the castle? He would not hear of it. “I’m taking you out of here.”
She was the reason he’d tasted freedom and might just have a chance at a real life if Adrian’s team could succeed. Growing up in his family’s pack had been difficult at best, and he’d lived day by day in misery for the past two years, expecting death around every corner.
This woman had given him hope and a reason to believe in a promising future.
Cupping his face between her hands, she said, “You don’t know what has happened since you left. Krol left with Rez. I have no idea where he’s going or if he will return with her. I can’t leave with no idea of how to find her, and I feel my best chance at dreaming where they are is while I’m in this castle.”
This complicated things considerably, but not so much that they couldn’t find a way out of this mess. “Okay, we can figure this out. I’ll be very quiet so you can sleep and dream. Then we’ll know where she went.”
“It’s not that simple.” She nibbled on her lower lip, a nervous movement.
“Have you been sleeping?”
“Not really.” She raked a handful of hair back from her face.
“Then you must be tired enough to sleep.” He didn’t understand what was going on, but he now realized he would not get Alifair out of here unless she knew where Rez had gone.
“I’ve tried. I only dream of... ” Her lips pressed closed. Her eyes shifted away from him in a guilty reaction.
Why? Nothing she could do would equal all the shifters he’d been forced to kill over two years.
Her hesitation piqued his interest. He smiled at her. “Are you having erotic dreams?”
Her hand slapped over his mouth, but the rose-colored cheeks gave her away.
Gently moving her hand, he teased her. “So, youhavebeen having sexy dreams.” He considered just what she might have done in these dreams and if she’d been with anyone other than him. “Whowas in these dreams with you?”
Her pretty lips parted. “Why are you angry?”
“I’m not angry.” That might be a lie. He’d never been jealous in the past, but neither had he felt this ache in his chest for another woman. The rest of the men in this world could have any other woman.
He wanted Alifair.
She started laughing and couldn’t stop, even when tears spilled from her eyes.
That just pissed him off more. “What’s so damned funny?”
Gasping for air, she finally stopped laughing like she’d lost her mind. “I’m... sorry.” She took a deep breath. “It’s just your face. You’re angry over what might have happened in a dream world.”
Yes, he was. His glower did not change.
“Are you jealous?” She seemed happy at that thought.
“Who. Was. In. Your. Dream?” He’d had some steamy dreams with her. He didn’t want her having any with another man, even a make-believe man. And he didn’t care how ridiculous that sounded even in his head.
Her smile poked at his anger. She chuckled a little, then leaned close to say, “It was you in my dreams, silly, but I’m not telling you what we were doing.” She wrapped her arms around him, laying her head on his chest.
Just him. He probably looked like an idiot with a big grin on his face and didn’t care. Happiness had never been part of his world until he met a cookie fairy with the courage of a fierce warrior. He brushed his hand over her hair, kissed her neck, and then nuzzled her hair.
That drew another sweet sound from her.
With more time and privacy, he’d get more than a little mewling from her.
None of that would happen if he couldn’t get her out of here before Krol returned. Laying his head on her shoulder, he sighed hard enough to blow her curls around.
