Tears stream down mycheeks as I face this new reality.
But I can’t let Rev go now. It’s maybe the most selfish thing I’ve ever done, but—he did it for me. He doomed the world, to save my life. Now it’s my turn to do the same.
“Save him.”
“You’re sure?” the Light King says, his voice empty of judgment.
“Caelynn?” someone calls in the distance, the voice is soft, feminine. I frown, looking over the mess of a battleground. Most of the water has retreated, flowing back into Black Lake but it left a mess of slippery muck over the surrounding miles.
Kari and Ty stop the moment they see us, lying in the mud. Kari’s wide eyes stop on the Light King, his massive form still pulsing with a dull light. Ty is equally as stunned but then he clenches his jaw and marches closer. Kari is right on his heels.
“Is there another way?” I ask the spell book. “To defeat the Night Bringer. Is there a way?”
The spell book pauses.
“I need Rev. I need you to save him. I don’t care what it costs. But I’m not going to give up.”
“There might be a way...”
Kari gasps as she noticed Rev’s body, still. Skin grey. Ty falls to his knees beside him. “No,” he whispers.
“Do it now,” I demand. Ty looks up at me, fear and confusion on his expression.
The Light King reaches down and touches his massive forefinger to my mate’s chest.
Rev
First, I am cold. Anicy chill rushes through my limbs, and the darkness seeps into my very being.
Then, there is warmth. A gentle light that soars straight at me, growing brighter every moment. Soon, it covers the darkness.
The pressure, the weight, the burden—it’s gone. Why was I so burdened before this moment? I can’t remember. I can’t even fathom. But I do know that this feels good.
I am surrounded by white light on every side. “Where am I?” I look down at my body. I’m naked. How the hell did I get naked?
Death is freedom,a whisper floats through my mind, and I blink rapidly.
