Her eyes are dark and determined. The severe Shadow fae I’ve come to expect her to be around others. Not me. It’s the face of sheer determination and anger. The face of revenge.

“We have a plan.”

“Okay,” I say slowly. “What is it?”

“There’s only one way we can beat the Night Bringer now, according to the spell book,” Caelynn tells us. “We can’t kill him—but we can trap him.”

Kari’s eyebrows rise. “Like your ancestor tried to do before?”

Caelynn nods. “But we’re not going to the Schorchedlands where he’ll have access to fae and magic.”

“Then where?” I ask

“We have to go to the human realm.”

Kari’s eyes grow wide. “What?”

“The Night Bringer will lose power if he travels into another world and the spell will have a stronger hold on him. We can separate him permanently from the spell book, which would be required for him to break his curse. We can make sure he can never break free.”

“How?” I ask.

“By destroying the link between our worlds.”

Caelynn

The Light King’s zapof magic flashes through Rev and me and the world disappears. Power rips at my body and then all at once the world spins back into focus.

My boots land solidly into mossy ground. My mind spins, as we refocus on our new surroundings, twisting vines and a canopy of leaves. I cling tightly to Rev, and he holds me steady.

I refuse to let him go. I need to feel him with me at all times or I will fall into the maze of agonizing panic. Luckily, Rev is okay with this arrangement, and he hasn’t even commented on how tightly I hold his hand.

“What the hell?” someone says. A voice I don’t recognize.

Two fae scramble to their feet just feet down the path, weapons out. The male holds a long sword. The female’ bow and arrow is pointed straight at Rev’s chest. I shift in front of him.

Rev holds up one hand up. The other squeezes mine tightly.
