“We catch his attention, and then run,” I say.
Raven frowns. “Run where?”
Caelynn smiles. “The human world.”
“That’s where we need your help.”
Caelynn
We only manage a fewhours of rest before Rev and I become restless. The forest is dark, but the sounds of creeping creatures never settle. If anything, it grows louder.
Aurora, Raven, and Blane sleep side by side, and at one point, I notice Aurora and Raven’s fingers interlacing in their sleep. I’d love to know what is happing with those three, but I don’t want to be nosy or push something that’s not yet settled.
I curl up on Rev’s chest, and he kisses my head.
“I love you,” he whispers against my hair.
“I love you too.” I think again of that sweet future with Rev, by my side in the Shadow Court.
My heart aches to think that is a future I could have. I could have if...
I shake my head.
We lay there, listening to the sounds of this untamed forest and looking up at the rustling leaves high above. This forest is strong in magic, that much is obvious. I’ve only ever heard legends of it. I had never expected to experience it myself.
Are there other things I’ll never get to experience?
In a few hours, we’re going to face my nightmare again.
“What are you thinking about?” Rev whispers.
“What our lives will be like tomorrow.” I nuzzle into his chest.
We can imprison the Night Bringer, but it’s not only him. One of us will have to stay behind when we destroy the portals.
“He’s moving.”
