“Threats, sometimes. Taunts. He says... he says he requires a sacrifice.”

Rev

“Look at me,” I say, heart pounding. God, just moments before we were blissful. Now... now, I wonder if this will be the last moment I have with her. She’s going to go. I can see it in her eyes. She’s going to approach the King of Light, and it’s going to kill her.

I require a sacrifice.

“Do not go without me.”

Her beautiful golden eyes fill with tears, but somehow the color remains. “I’m not afraid to die, Rev.”

Those words carve through me like a knife, splitting my heart in two. “Maybe not,” I croak. “But it would destroyme.”

Caelynn closes her eyes and shakes her head. “What if... what if this was always my destiny?” she whispers. “I shouldn’t have ever taken the bargain. I should have died then and there. I should have taken the pain, accepted it. Instead, I brought that evil into this world. I gave it life.”

“No!” I say. “You are wrong, Caelynn. You are not at fault for their evil.”

Her eyes meet mine again, dimmer this time. She doesn’t believe me. I pull in a long breath, determination filling me. “Listen. I need you to wait for me. I’m going to talk to Rai and the queen. Then, we’ll decide. There’s no rush. If we go, we go together.” I hold her upper arms tightly, willing her to believe me. Agree.

Her breath shudders, confusion and indecision raging in her eyes. But finally, she nods.
