Rev

Istop, staring atthe little ball of light inside the cavern, far beneath the banquet hall.

While Caelynn spoke with Drake, I slipped down the corridor, following the Light King’s call. She’s going to come down here soon. But if I can get there first, maybe I can get ahead of the punishment.

I don’t have a spell book to guide me, but it doesn’t seem that I need it. The Light King is waiting for me.

The pulsing magic guided me down the stairs toward the dungeons, where Caelynn was kept, and into a cavern covered in crystals. A light flickers over the shallow water, and I step forward.

“I’ve been waiting for you, Reveln.”

“You’ve been waiting for the chance to kill my mate,” I growl.

The shallow water trembles with his harsh laughter. “You believe I desire fae deaths.”

“Do you not?”

“I have rage. I thirst for any way to alleviate my pain. And for a Shadow fae so eager to give her life for her cause...”

My blood runs cold. Panic fills my limbs until my chest is heaving and mind is spinning.

“Is that what you fear most, Reveln, the High Prince? Your mate’s death?”

“Yes,” I admit.

“She is coming now,” the king says quietly. “She will offer me her life. Would you like to watch?”

My stomach drops, but before I can react, my muscles freeze and I am trapped. A hand of light shifts me to the side, behind him. Fast footsteps echo through the cavern, and then she’s there. Caelynn. Her eyes shine with determination, her jaw set.

I watch as Caelynn speaks to the ancient. She doesn’t even know I’m here.

“I require a sacrifice,” the king purrs.

“I said no matter the cost,” she says through gritted teeth.

No! I cry out inside my mind, but I cannot form the words. Don’t let her. Please.

A massive wave of white glowing power rises up over her. I scream and beg and plead inside my mind, but I can only watch helplessly.
