“I do.”

“Would you pass too, High Prince? If I were to give you a test as well?”

“Yes,” I say, not even stopping to consider the details. “Test me too.”

The King of Light smiles.

The blow never comes. The roar of rushing water settles into a simmer.

“My mate was the Queen of the Shadow realm. Like you,” the Light King says.

I press my trembling lips together tightly, still half cowering before the stillness. I can’t see anything in the blinding light, and I assume he’s holding the wave towering over me, deciding when and how to destroy me.

“But you knew that,” he whispers.

“Yes,” I rasp.

“How?” he demands.

The spell book trembles against my back. This is what the book has feared these last few days. This moment.

“A lot has happened in the years you’ve been slumbering,” I tell the ancient. “Most of the ancients are gone for good but there are several still around. You. The Night Bringer and Night Terror, who are actively seeking to regain their power over the world and reign over the fae as gods. There was an ancient slumbering beneath the Black Lake. This afternoon, she was awakened and has joined my enemies. There is the nomad, an ancient living in wolf form in the Twisted Forest. And one other.” I pause.

“Who?”

I take a deep breath and pull the bag from my back. I hold it against my chest for a long moment and then reveal the leather tome. “This book holds the soul of an ancient. His power, along with a spell, allows the book to see all. It knows everything that has happened.”

“Who?” The waters tremble at the sound of his voice.

“His name was Taliesin.”

A curse releases from the Ancient King’s rumbling voice. “How is it only my enemies have survived all these years?”

My stomach sinks. His words solidify my guess.
