We march down the frontsteps of the High Court just as the ground begins to quake. The palace rattles and sways.

“What is happening?” The High Queen says, looking out at the waters of the source sea. The waves rise and toss, building into a massive wave.

“That’s our ally,” I say.

The rumbling increases until the pebbles at our feet are leaping. The castle behind us sways.

“You did,” she says. “You raised that beast that destroyed the High Court. You fool!” She marches down toward us, finger pointed and glowing red along with her eyes. “I wouldn’t want you as a High King, Reveln. You will be nothing, you selfish, moronic fae, wooed by a helpless girl who thinks herself important.”

Rev whips his head in her direction, and before I can even blink, his hand flies up, sending a jolt of white light right at the High Queen of all the fae. The light settles right over her mouth, sealing it shut.

“I will no longer tolerate anyone insulting my mate, including you. I am no longer your problem. I am glad you agree it’s for the best.”

The High Queen stands there, red eyes glowing, her mouth sealed shut by white light. She has the power to crush him here and now but she remains unmoving. Her guards are equally as stunned.

I pull Rev by the arm quickly and rush from the palace toward the newly reconstructedportal bay.

“Where are we going?” Rev leans in close. Nothing worse than making a dramatic exit and then having to stop to ask directions.

“They are still in the Crackling Court; we can head them off there.”

“I will meet you there,” the powerful voice of the Light King reverberates over the island.

A bright light rises from the crashing waves beyond until his massive bright white form is towering over the palace.

The council stands, mouths ajar, at the top of the palace steps. I pull Rev through the Crackling Court portal before the High Queen decides to act on Rev’s treasonous response. Magic shocks our senses as we step through into the pine forest clearing.

“WE SHOULD TALK TO RAIJIN,” I tell Rev. Down the hill, the glistening dark waters of Black Lake can be seen in the distance. “If this battle happens at Black Lake...”

Rev curses under his breath.

Three figures join us through the portal. Rai, Kari, and Ty.

“We’re coming with you,” Kari says breathlessly. “You can’t change our minds.”

I shake my head. “Like hell I can’t—”

Rev pulls me in close. “We may need help.”
