“I know your game, Drake. I can play it too.”

His yellow eyes narrow. He thinks I mean his sharp words and mental games—and he’s right; I can do that too. I know what hurts him as much as he knows what hurts me. But I have something else in mind.

“The difference, Caelynn of the Shadow Court, is you don’t realize that you’ve already lost.”

I curl my lip and spin to find Rev kneeling beside the queen, whispering in her ear. My stomach churns. Rev will try to stop me. The spell book will try to stop me.

But I refuse to allow their fear to hold me back from killing the monster that still haunts me.

“We’ll see about that,” I tell Drake, even as anxiety curls low in my belly.

Caelynn

Iwatch Drake strollacross the ballroom while couples still twirl with smiles on their faces. You’ve already lost.

He turns, looks straight at me and winks.

My stomach drops. What’s to stop Drake from approaching the Light King himself? It wouldn’t take much to convince the ancient to kill me. I spin to the platform where the queen sits stoically, staring out at the dancing figures. Rev is no longer with her.

I frown, heart hammering. Where is he? I can’t wait any longer.

Breath shudders from my lungs, and I make a snap decision. Maybe it’s the wrong one. Maybe I’m being as foolish as I was back then. But I can’t do nothing. I’m so tired of playing these games while my enemies continue getting the upper hand. If Drake convinces the Light King to trust him, all of my happiness will slip from my fingers like sand.

I follow Drake.
