How much would that change if they found out I might have the ability to take away their magic altogether?

I’d be the most dangerous person in this school.

I bow my head as a thrilling rush washes over me. Shit. I like that feeling way too much.

If I had the power to take away magic— “You’re right. Just the idea of stealing magic is indescribably dangerous. It was just a thought.”

“A thought you should be very, very wary of.” She nods sharply.

A loud pounding on the door makes me jump. I give a look to both Lola and Janet, who seem equally unnerved by the timing.

“Expecting someone?” Janet asks.

I shake my head and then resettle my potions to answer the door.

I pull open the heavy door, and my eyes widen when I find Manuela leaning against the doorway casually, that sharp look in her eyes.

“We need to talk.”

I Enjoy Testing You

I swallow in response to the dryad-witch hybrid demanding a conversation. Our last didn’t go as terribly as it could have, but it also didn’t go well. Power pulses from her, making me even more wary of the situation.

I try hard not to show how it affects me. “Okay,” I say as calmly as I can manage.

“Let’s go for a walk,” she says, swinging the door wide for me.

“You’re very demanding,” I comment, aiming for casual, but I obey and exit the room, leaving my shocked friends behind.

“And you like it.” Her smile eases the tension in my chest.

I blink. “Only a little,” I say, voice quieter than it should be. “I prefer to be in control, personally.”

“Ahh, a girl after my own heart. Does Jarron enjoy being controlled?” she purrs.

My cheeks heat, and I decide not to comment.

She stops in the middle of the circular room with all the bronze doors. So much for a “walk.” We only took a few steps.

My gaze darts to Jarron’s door and then back.

Her smile remains steady. “Do you know what these are?”

“Private spaces for the demon heirs. I don’t know what specifically, though.”

She quirks a brow. “Some of them are private personal spaces, but I happen to know at least one of them holds a portal.”

My eyes widen. “A portal to…”

She grins wide. “Scared, princess?”

I cross my arms. “I’ve never been a big fan of portals.”

“Prey instinct.” She nods absently. “You’re a fierce one but not entirely immune to that fear running through your veins. You know the kind of creatures that could come from a portal. You know what they could do to you.”

I grimace. “What’s your point?”
