“She will have the lobster rolls with lobster bisque and a Caesar salad.” He spoke clearly and confidently.
“Got it, sir. Now, what will you have?”
“I’ll take the blackened cod with steamed vegetables and the whipped mashed potatoes.”
“Sounds good, sir. I’ll put that in right now for you two.”
“One more thing. Can you bring a bottle of the best Chardonnay to the table?”
“Sure thing. I’ll be back shortly.” The server walked away swiftly with pep in his step. It was something about Dre’s voice that was respectful yet demanding in a subtle way, and I loved it.
We sat and exchanged looks a few times while we waited for the bottle of wine. Sipping my water, I could feel Dre’s eyes boring a hole in me. I could feel that he was about to ask me something.
“Lyra?”
“Yeah?”
“Is there anything that scares you about being in love?”
My stomach flipped, and I almost spat out the little bit of water left in my mouth that I had just drunk.
“And don’t say that falling too fast scares you, because we’re here right now. So, obviously, that isn’t scary.”
He was right, for sure. It was the first time I ever blindly trusted someone with my heart in that way, and everything about it felt more than right.
“What scares me most is not being loved properly and not being treated the way I deserve to be. It’s happened a few times before over the years, and because of it, I’ve become guarded in a sense.”
“It’s obvious. I can tell you want to trust me and what we have going on, but there’s a wall up, and my intent is to break it and care for you the way you deserve to be cared for.”
His words continuously melted into my soul. I had always wanted that type of love, but I had my doubts. Were we moving too fast?
“I adore you, Dre, truly.”
“And I adore you, beautiful. You know that?”
I couldn’t do anything but smile shyly and nod. He took my hand in his and caressed the top of my hand gently and intentionally. A few seconds passed, and our server brought the wine along with the food. It all smelled delicious, and I was ready to dive in.
“For the lady.” He set the salad and the plate of lobster rolls and bisque in front of me.
I inhaled the fresh smell of lobster and knew immediately it would taste delicious.
“For you, sir.” The server set his plate in front of Dre.
Dre’s plate looked good as well.
“You’re going to let me taste that, right?” I asked, laughing.
“It’s your world, baby. I’m here to protect and give you my best.”
His words pierced my heart in ways that they hadn’t been before, and I was at a loss for words. He grabbed my hands and led us in a quick prayer before we dove into our lunch.
“Here. Open up.” Dre had a forkful of cod and mashed potatoes and fed it to me. I didn’t know if it was the food or the fact that he gave me some of his before he even took a bite himself. I chewed for a few moments to get it down.
“Why are you so considerate?” I asked. “The cod is delicious, by the way.”
“Listen, I can tell that you’re deprived of a lot of shit, and I have to change it. I need you as carefree and open as possiblewith me. Everything I do for you is because I want to. You don’t have to question anything going on here. I’m telling you… my heart is leading me, and for once, I’m following.”
“But we can’t always go off feelings, can we?” I asked.
