on an eerie glow. “If it was camouflaged, then how did
you know there was someone there?”
“My gut told me. I didn’t see anything, didn’t really feel anything, other than a serious case of the
creeps when I was leaving the motel with the kid.
There was something watching me. Or her. Or us.”
Roxy laced her fingers behind her head and flopped
back, the mattress bouncing a bit under her weight.
It felt so good to lie down. She stared at the ceiling,
weighing her words, then said, “I think it might have
been a reaper.”

“A soul reaper?” For once, Calliope’s tone veered
from cool and even, the question laced with disbelief.
Roxy turned her head.
Calliope just stared at her, and Roxy figured it was
time to scale back the sass. She knew her mentor’s
limits, and she’d already pushed them, hard.
“You were that close to a soul reaper and he let you
live?”
Now, wasn’t that a fine question? She couldn’t see a
way to suddenly admit that this wasn’t the first, but the
second time a soul reaper had done exactly that. How
was she supposed to explain the fact that one of their
enemies had not just set her free the last time they’d met
but had saved her life and given her a stake to get
