mouth, he knew Dae would take it for the acquiescence it was. Osiris would know that two soul reapers
had walked into his territory, but if only one remained
to face him, the damage could be minimized.
Mal throttled the urge to argue further. Instead, he
grasped his brother’s forearm, hauled him close and
thumped his fist against Dae’s chest.
“Just don’t get yourself hacked to bits.”
One side of Dagan’s mouth quirked up. “Wouldn’t
say it’s at the top of my to-do list.”

PYOTR TURNED TO CONVERSE with the man on his left,
meaningless words. He ate and drank and enjoyed the
meal, the second of the celebratory dinners since he
had chosen Marie as his perfect sacrifice. He smiled
and laughed at appropriate moments. He was very
good at soothing his congregation, even when he called
only a fraction of his charm and wiles into play.
As the honeyed cakes and mint tea were brought out
to end the repast, he caught the eye of High Reverend
Djeserit Bast, who sat at the head of the table next to his
own. He dipped his head toward her. It was enough. She
excused herself and rose and, moments later, Pyotr followed.
“Are you aware that we had a visitor? One of Aset’s
Daughters?” Djeserit asked without tact or foreplay as
Pyotr joined her in her private office.
