“I won.” Barely. There had been a heart-stopping
moment or two where she hadn’t been too sure that
she’d be walking away from that one. It had been a
good wake-up call as to the limitations of her supernatural enhancements. Yes, she was stronger than the
average human, female or male, but that strength paled
in the face of power such as that wielded by a soul
reaper. So she’d trained harder, learned to think smarter
and whittled away at her limitations. “We had a disagreement about three teenaged girls and what their
future might hold. Asshole wanted to sell them to
Asmodeus as psy-whores.”
“Not a nice life, and certainly not a long one. I assume you had something different in mind?”
“I wanted them to head back to high school.”
“Hmm. You sent them back to a normal life.” He fell
silent, the quiet lasting long enough that she thought
he’d run out of things to say. Then, “What’s out there
is not like anything you’ve encountered. Do exactly as
I say and you won’t die here tonight.”
“S’okay. I’m pretty adept at keeping myself safe.”
And that would include hiding behind him if it proved
prudent, or running if that was her best choice.
