“We split up because I’m not inclined to take on the
two of you as reaper shadows,” Dagan said, “no matter
what the old man prefers. And she stays with me because I’m not done with her yet.”
“Keep arguing, boys.” Roxy shook her head and
stepped away. He caught her hand.
She glanced down, then up. It was too dark for her
to see much of anything, he knew. But he was under
no such limitation. Her features were as clear to him
as if she were standing under the full force of the sun.
“You wanna lose that one, too?”
He laughed then. He couldn’t help it. She amused
him. Enraged him. Confused him. Made him want to
drag her up against him and push his tongue in her
mouth, close his hand on her breast. Made him want
to take her, and let her take him.
Abruptly, he dropped her hand and broke the connection.
It worked, at least to a degree. The lust that had hit
him like a brick wall eased, and he could think. He
could breathe.
Whatever the hell was between them, she felt it,
too. Her pulse was racing. He could hear it.
“Quite finished, are we?” Alastor muttered. Dagan
figured he’d be called on the carpet to answer a shitload of questions at some point, but not now. Not in
front of Gahiji.

It wouldn’t do to let their father’s mole know any
unnecessary details. The soul reaper was already
watching Roxy much too closely, like he was trying to
figure out what made her tick.
