She opened her mouth to offer a sassy comeback,
but what came out wasn’t anything she wanted to say.
“You left me.” The words surged and tore free from
somewhere deep inside, a place she had always refused
to acknowledge. She immediately wished she could
call them back. They made no sense. Her feelings about
him made no sense.
He raked his fingers back through his hair and then
glanced down at the glass in his hand, as though wondering where it had come from. He set it on the night
table.
Don’t answer,she thought.Let it go.Safer that way.
Safer to cling to the possibility that maybe she’d misread, maybe he didn’t feel a damned thing for her and
saving her was all about getting information.
Then he did answer, and blew that theory all to hell.
“I wanted you to have a nice, safe, normal life,
Roxy. A mortal life.” His tone was low, and he didn’t
look at her, just kept his eyes on the empty glass,
tapping the tip of his index finger against the rim. “You
wouldn’t have if I was in it.”
“So you left me to figure it all out alone?” He hadn’t
even told her what he’d done to her, hadn’t warned her
