you could find your mother’s killer? Wreak bloody,
brutal revenge? Would you turn down that
opportunity—” he slanted her a dark look “—even if
it unleashed a fucking Armageddon?”
Her mother’s killer. There it was. Cold and ugly
and bare. Her mother had been murdered. Somehow he
knew that for certain.
She knew her pain was etched on her face, bare and
raw. She knew it, and she couldn’t find the strength to
try and hide it.

No, she supposed they weren’t.
“I killed him,” he said then, his expression one of
satisfaction. “The one who murdered your mother. I
tore open his chest. I pulled out his heart. And I sent
his darksoul to Sutekh.” He bared his teeth in a parody
of a smile. “How did you describe it? Ah, yes…I broke
the cycle. No chance for rebirth. He is simply—” he
snapped his fingers “—gone.”
Rage and nausea and hate boiled in her gut. “I
wanted to be the one—”
“Precisely.”
Their gazes locked and she acknowledged game
point. She knew exactly how he felt about his brother’s
killer.
