Roxy’d gotten to him. The question clamored to crawl
free, his natural reticence holding it back. Finally, he
asked, “Hey Alastor, you ever readThe Godfather?”
A huffing exhalation, then, “I saw the movie.”
“Not the same.”
“Why do you ask?”
How to explain? He tried to think of a way to
come at the question from an angle that actually
made sense, but he came up with nothing. He shook
his head. What was he thinking? Alastor knew as
much about women as he did.
“Let me know what you find out about Gahiji,”
Dagan said, dropping the subject, knowing that his
brother was probably wondering if he had gonebloody
daft.
Next up, Dagan dialed Mal, listened to the ring,
then the message.“You got Mal. Talk. If I like what you
have to say, you’ll hear back from me.”
Dagan didn’t talk; he just disconnected the call.

SINS OF THE HEART
He’d barely shoved his phone in his pocket when it
rang.
“Yeah.”
“A little surly today?”
Ignoring Mal’s question, Dagan asked, “Does the
old man have a reaper shadowing you?”
“He did. Samuel left about an hour ago.”
“So you’re alone?”
“For a short while.”
