The Underworld, The Territory of Sutekh

MAL STOOD IN SUTEKH’S GREETING chamber. He’d been

about to head out the door for a run, when he’d felt dark

wisps of power prodding at the edges of his thoughts.

It had been almost two centuries since he’d learned to

completely block his father’s intrusions, but Sutekh

never got tired of trying. Mal had considered ignoring

the summons, but in the end, he set his iPod on the

shelf, opened a portal and headed for Sutekh’s realm.

The room was empty when he arrived. Typical. Send

him an urgent summons, then make him wait.

He sauntered past the rows of painted columns toward the open doors that led to the secluded garden.

He could smell the lotus blossoms, hear the trickle of

water from the pool. He got only as far as the chairs at

the far end of the room before he sensed his father’s

presence behind him.

Turning, he grinned. “Top of the morning, Sutekh.

Nice hat.”

Today his father had chosen to don the guise of traditional Egyptian royalty. Over a long linen tunic he

wore a transparent robe that grazed his ankles. He was

youthful in appearance, barely past the flush of childhood. His olive skin was smooth and utterly hairless,

and he wore an elaborate gold headdress, inlaid with

glittering stones.

Shiny.

Mal itched to get his hands on those stones. He

knew a Topworld fence who could work wonders…
