tandem. Calliope stepped to her right, legs bent, body
coiled.
Dagan mirrored her movement, prowling like a

beast about to spring on its kill, matching each step
Calliope took. They circled, and circled again.
Seconds oozed past, and Roxy fought the sick feeling that burned high in her gut. This moment was only
a reprieve. She was going to have to betray someone
tonight. Dagan? Calliope? Maybe even herself.
Roxy leaped between them, one hand going flat on
Dagan’s chest, the other catching Calliope’s forearm.
“Enough,” she snarled. Then she turned her face to
Dagan and barked, “I need five minutes of privacy.
Now.”
Beneath her touch, she felt Calliope tense. Guess
that barking orders at a soul reaper just wasn’t done.
Dagan narrowed his eyes. She thought he would
argue. Maybe even move past her to get at Calliope. He
was faster than she could ever hope to be.
“Please,” she gritted.
His nostrils flared, then he gave a sharp nod and
stepped away. He turned and stalked from the house,
slamming the front door behind him.
