“Excellent question,” Dagan murmured. “I’d be

very interested in the answer. Quite the shock. One

minute Roxy’s bleeding all over me, the next I’m

bleeding down her throat. Fascinating turn of events.

Especially when the hole in her chest started to knit like

it was kicked into fast-forward.”

“What?” Roxy whirled to him. What was he saying?

That hehadn’tknown she drank blood? Hadn’t known

what she was?

“But you made me,” she cried. “You turned me into

a blood-drinking fiend. A vampire. Why are you asking

herabout this?”

She heard Calliope’s sharp intake of breath, felt the

tension in the room thick as a pea-soup fog. Turning,

she met her mentor’s gaze. The expression on Calliope’s

face made her stomach churn. Something wasn’t right.

In fact, something was terribly, terribly wrong.

“Not my doing,” Dagan said, his hands spread before him, palms up. “And you’re not a vampire. There

are no such things as vampires. They’re a myth perpetrated by a panic-stricken public in response to natural

changes of decomposition.”

“What?” Roxy felt like a contestant on some bizarre

game show. She wanted to go look for the cameras,

because nothing else made any sense. Panting, she

turned to Calliope. “Talk. Now.”

Calliope looked stricken, her cheeks drained of

color, her eyes wide. She shot a glance at Dagan, as

though willing him to leave, but he only crossed his
