Damn. Faced with the same set of facts, she’d wonder that herself.

She sighed and then bolted upright as she was struck

by a new and not-so-lovely thought. “You need to move

the kid.” She’d been stupid. She saw that with sudden,

blinding clarity. “I’d like to say that I’m certain I wasn’t

followed, but, see, that’s the thing. Play along with me

for a sec.” She slammed the side of her fist against her

thigh. “If itwasa reaper, he could have followed me to

the kid’s house, and all my precautions aren’t worth a

damn, ’cause I’d never have known he was behind me.”

She should have considered that before. She’d

watched her tail, been certain there was nothing there,

but this conversation with Calliope left her feeling less

secure in her certainty. If shehadbeen followed, it was

likely that she was the target. But what if she wasn’t?

already been a target once.

“I’ll send an apprentice to relocate them.”

“Will the kid’s mom agree to this?” Roxy asked.

“She came to us when the child was snatched. I suspect she’ll agree to whatever will keep Dana from

being taken once more.”

“She came to us?” Roxy echoed. That struck her as

odd. How did a mortal woman know about the Otherkin?

But Calliope was already making the call to Oklahoma City, using the phone by the bed, a secure landline. A brief exchange set the wheels in motion.

One worry taken care of. Another flared. As

Calliope replaced the receiver, Roxy pointed out, “If it

was a soul reaper, he could have followed me here

without me ever having a clue.”
