Still, Pyotr was ever one to plan for all possibilities, and
so he had had Frank Marin take her rather than killing
her outright. The fool was meant to keep her safe for
any future need.
But Marin had screwed up, stopping overnight in a
place he was not supposed to stop and hence setting the
whole plan awry. Pyotr had sent a contingent to retrieve
the girl from Marin, but they had failed to complete
their mission before Roxy stepped in. Which left Marin
dead and the girl missing.
All very inconvenient, but fixable.
“Do you know where she is?” he asked.
Djeserit’s lips thinned. Perhaps she saw through his
ruse. Perhaps not.
“Doyou?” She tapped the tip of her right index finger against the glass of her desk. It was enough to
betray her unease. It was enough to tell Pyotr that she,
too, had people looking.
“No.” And that was truth. He didn’t know. Not yet.
But ask him in a matter of hours, and the truth would
change. Circumstances would change. But one thing
would remain constant. “We must stick by our plan.
Detail by detail, we must not waver.”
Djeserit nodded. “We will open a place for a new
soul reaper in the ranks.”
