clear to the bone. She kicked and jerked, but the genie
held her.
Only willpower and gritted teeth kept her from
screaming in agony.
Roxy shot a glance at Dagan. No help there. He was
buried under a pile of concubines that clung to his back
and shoulders, arms and legs tangled so Roxy couldn’t
even tell how many there were.
The pain in her ankle intensified, white-hot agony,
and she did scream then, a short cry that she strangled
almost as soon as it was born. Dagan’s head jerked up
and his gaze met hers. Lips peeled back in rage, he
reared up. The fire genies tumbled to the ground, hissing and spitting like angry cats.
“Leave go, Naamah. If she is damaged, you answer
to me.” He directed his words to the one holding Roxy
even as he kicked back, caught one of the others in the
gut and sent her flying. A second creature clawed his
leg, talons tearing through denim, leaving bloody runnels in their wake.
Naamah. He knew her name. “Nothing like a re-208

union,” Roxy muttered. “What, you two go to high
school together?”
Neither one even glanced at her.
“You know my name.”
“Your reputation,” Dagan corrected, and Roxy revised her thinking. Guess this wasn’t a reunion after all.
“You think I fear you, soul reaper?” Naamah’s words
were laced with scorn, but the heat in Roxy’s ankle eased.
“I think youshould.” Roxy felt the icy promise of
those words.
But Naamah only laughed.
