I sigh dreamily as I answer, “I’m so good you would not believe it. I’ve been on a date tonight.”

“You have? That’s fantastic news. It’s time you started dating again.”

“I know. It’s just—”

“You don’t have to explain, I’ve been there, remember?” she tells me softly.

I smile and hope she can hear it when I say, “I remember and since we’re on the subject, how is your British piece of arse?”

Her laughter vibrates down the line. “It’sassand he’s great. We have the perfect long-distance relationship. No ties and no pressure. It’s exactly what I need right now.”

“You sure?”

“I am, Vickie, but we’re not talking about me. I want the details. Where did you meet him? Is he cute? What does he do for a living?”

“Wow, since when did you turn into the date police?”

“I’m sorry. I’m just excited for you.”

I smile at the thought of my good friend getting way ahead of herself. “You may need to calm down a little bit,” I tell her while closing my eyes and running over every detail and outline of Aiden’s beautifully crafted features. “But he is incredible.” I don’t know if I should say I’ve never felt more alive or ecstatic after a first date, but I haven’t and it’s one of the reasons I called. “Should I feel this good?”

“You totally should.”

“But what if he turns out—”

“He won’t. Not all men are the same and you have to start believing me when I say, trust your instincts.”

“I’m trying to.”

“What does that mean?”

“There was a bit of a misunderstanding to begin with. I mistook a friend of his as someone he’d just picked up. It’s all sorted now, but there was a moment when I thought he could be trouble.”

“Do you think he’s being honest with you?” Her tone is sincere and filled with concern.

I smile at the thought of him. “I do.”

“Then go with it and as I said, trust your instincts.”

I lie back on my bed and close my eyes. “I thought I could trust them last time and we both know what happened there.”

“Hey,” she coos, “lay Andy’s ghost to rest along with all your worries. This could be the new start you’ve waited too long for.”

“I hope so.”

“I know so. Now, tell me everything from the very beginning.”

We talk long into the night, but when I initially called, I wanted to gauge her reaction and gain her seal of approval. That may sound strange and is difficult to explain why. Steph, Bronte and Faith will always have my back through thick and thin, but the support I need is especially meaningful when it comes from Evelynn because only she knows every emotion I’m going through.
