“Don’t give me the fuck me voice. We don’t have time!’
He was already beginning to sweat.
“Stop for just a minute and listen to me!” I hated to shout.
The clothes he was holding dropped at his feet.
Another pain hit and this time I doubled over. “We’re already packed. It’s in the truck.” He helped me down the stairs and into the truck. I texted Marcie and she’d text the gang. I called the hospital to let them know that I was on my way and that my water had broken.
“Do these assholes have nothing better to do at two in the morning?” Photogs were everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, they’re good most of the time, but you don’t shove a camera in a pregnant woman’s face as she’s being wheeled in to give birth.
“This is nice,” Rowdy said, looking around the room we were placed in, trying his hardest to make me feel better.
I cut my eyes at him and frowned. He shoved his hands in his pockets and walked over the window and stared out at some shit going on outside. Once I was in a hospital gown, another nurse walked in with a handful of tubing and needles. My whale size ass lie in bed while my nurse kept looking at my husband. I cleared my throat, and when she looked at me, I tore into her.
“I’m the patient. Not him!” I pointed to where Rowdy stood by the window. “I don’t care how pregnant I am, you look at him that way again, and I’ll be out of this bed and on your ass in a heartbeat!”
Rowdy’s brows shot up all the way to his hairline in surprise.
“I’m so sorry,” she apologized.
“You should be!” I snapped back. She hooked up all the monitors and informed me they would be in to give me the epidural soon. The doctor came into the room and snapped on a pair of those ugly latex gloves. “Who are you?” I snapped.
“I’m Dr. Filmore. I’m the OBGYN on call tonight.”
“Well, Dr. Filmore, let’s get this show on the road. I feel like I have a basketball pushing its way out of me!
“Ow!!! Ow!!! Where is the guy with that damn epidural I was promised?”
“I’m afraid it’s a little too late for that, Mrs. Trent. It’s time to push. Mr. Trent, you can stand at her side and hold her hand or stand at the head of the bed and watch in the mirror.” He indicated the one on the wall behind him. “You can watch your daughter come into the world.”
“Oh my God! I’m dying!” I screamed, reaching for Rowdy’s hand.
“Okay, Storm. We’re ready to start pushing now.
He lowered himself onto the little rolling stool that gave him the full view of my hoohaw. Before I knew it my feet were in the stirrups and the sheet that had been covering me had been flipped up over my stomach. Great. Everyone had a clear view by now. “Maybe we should invite a few more people in here so they can watch, too,” I said sarcastically.
“Remember to breathe,” Rowdy reminded me, holding my hand.
“With the next contraction, I want you to push as hard as you can.”
“Remember to breathe.”
“Rowdy, you want to step around here and watch your little one come in to the world?” the doctor asked him.
I glanced up into the mirror just long enough to see our baby about to be born. I looked up at Rowdy and he was crying. It suddenly made all of this pain worth it.
Rowdy cut the cord and as soon as they swaddled the baby, they handed him to Rowdy.
He walked to my side and leaned down so that I could see the baby. He put him on my chest and kissed me. He was still crying. “I love you, Storm. Thank you.”
“I love you, too, Rowdy. Thank you.”
When they took him from my arms to clean him up, I immediately felt as if something were missing. Rowdy walked over to watch the nurses clean him up and place him in the little clear rolling crib. “What name should we put on the card?” the nurse asked and Rowdy and I looked back and forth at each other. We hadn’t even come up with a name.
“Rowdy Alan Trent,” I said, and Rowdy agreed. I loved nothing more than giving him Rowdy’s name.
There were no words to describe the feelings that ran through my veins as they placed him on my chest. Rowdy stroked my sweaty hair, removing it from my face. Tears sprang from my eyes when I heard his sweet little cry. His hair was black, and eyes were blue just like Rowdy’s. He was the spitting image of his father.
