“Well, after this show is over, you’ll be coming with me and we’ll be starting our lives together properly. What’s not to be excited about?”

He leaned down to kiss me deeply on the mouth, a moan slipping past my lips of its’ own accord. “Come on babe, we’re up.”

Luke bounded on stage ahead of me, waving to the crowd as I followed on behind him. I gazed out over the crowd, taking it all in. I glanced behind me to where Benny and Joel had taken their places, then moved to stand at Luke’s side.My heart was pumping inside my chest but I smiled through it, hoping the crowd wouldn’t see the nerves too easily.

“We have a special treat for you all tonight!” Luke called out over the screaming fans. “You’re going to be the first to witness the official return of Kate to the band!”

The fans shouted their excitement as I smiled and waved to them, while Luke continued.

“She was an original member of Midnight Kiss and she’s now honouring us by returning to make more music with us! Are you ready to hear her?”

The screaming grew louder as the people began to stamp their feet, chanting my name in anticipation of what was to come. Luke nodded to me as the band started to play, the music seeping into my bones and making me feel calm. He’d been right all along. This is where I belonged.

I stepped forwards and raised the microphone to my lips. I was finally ready to sing once more.

The End.

blurb

I was the oldest in our group. Sticks and Stones. And these younger guys always gave me shit about it for example the bottle of Geritol sitting beside the coffee pot. It was my band but sometimes these younger guys gave me a run for my money, not that 32 was old. They especially liked to give me crap over the twenty-four-year-old lead singer of Paper Hearts. (Our opening band.) She was the lead singer of their band with beautiful blonde hair and big beautiful blue eyes. The only thing we both carried baggage from our past that threatened to tear us a part. Can two people hiding behind the mask of abuse come together as one?

. . .

When Russ, our drummer, called me a couple of weeks ago and said that he wanted to throw me a birthday party in Vegas, I agreed to come. But I told him only if it wasn’t in a strip club. I knew how his mind worked and any chance he got to stick dollar bills in a thong, he was all in. When we formed our band Styx and Stones ten years ago, Russ and I quickly became good friends. When the band wasn’t touring, I was ready for anything, except now I was ready for some down time. Long nights and early mornings started to take a toll on your body and I was not getting any younger. I haven’t told the guys yet because they would think I was a pussy, but I was ready to find that someone special and work less hours. These guys weren’t thirty-three like me. Most of the band was in their late twenties. I felt more like the guitar player in Motley Crue with all my aches and pains these days.

The next day I jumped on my cherry red Harley and prepared myself for the nine-hour ride to Vegas. I choose to live in LA where our record label was located while some of the other guys choose the nightlife of Las Vegas. I pulled onto the highway and laid it in the wind. There’s nothing more relaxing than a peaceful ride on the open road with the wind in your face. Today’s a sunny day with no rain in sight.

When I arrived in Vegas, traffic was a bitch on the stirp. Another reason why I didn’t live in Vegas. All the tourists. I stopped at a light and shot Russ a text to let him know that I was stuck in traffic but would be there soon. Once the traffic finally broke free, I made my way into a secluded neighborhood with multimillion dollar homes. I rolled to a stop at his gate and pushed the button.

“Who is it?” Russ came over the intercom pretending to be grouchy.
