“Well, don’t leave me hanging,” Ezra said, sarcasm bleeding through his tone.
“Wraith.” It was hard to deny, when I laid out all the information in front of me. I’d been flipping through books at the library, trying to find another answer, but it was the only explanation that made sense.
“Fuck,” he cursed.
I agreed with the sentiment wholeheartedly. Wraiths were undead creatures born of evil and darkness. They despised the light—living in dark, damp spaces—and fed off of energy, infecting the land slowly with their own unique brand of poison.
It was a creature that should never have been let out of the depths of the underworld, and yet, there was onehere. Here, in my mate’s idyllic small town, feeding from its magical barrier.
“At least I understand how so many beings have been able to break through the wards now,” I said, tossing back my drink. “While it might be keeping humans out, it’s hopeless against the rest of our kinds.”
“Do you think they know?”
I shook my head. “At least, not yet. But their coven… They want to destroy the wards.”
He frowned. “We can’t let them do that. At least, not yet.”
“What other choice do we have?”
“Callthem.”
I shook my head. “No way. Anything but that.”
“You know what we have to do, B.”
Unfortunately… I did.
CHAPTER NINETEEN

Barrett walked outside with Ezra, and I turned back to Rina. “What was that?”
She frowned. “What?”
I didn’t think I was mistaken—something had happened between them. Some connection as soon as their eyes had met. “When you saw Barrett’s friend, you totally froze. What happened?”
Rina looked down at her deep purple fingernails, inspecting them like she was worried she’d cracked her manicure. “Nothing.”
Wendy gave her a pointed look. “Sabrina.”
She groaned, crumbling under the weight of her best friend’s stare. “Ugh. I don’t even know where to begin.” Rina looked outside, where the two guys were now chatting. “Look, I know I don’t talk a lot about my gift. But I can see auras. Oneveryone. His aura is…” She shivered. “I’ve never seen a color like that before. So… deep andangry.”
My eyes widened. “You can? What does mine look like?”
“Green.” She turned to Wendy. “And yours is pink, before you ask. I’ll tell you more about it later. I just…” Rina looped her arms through both of ours. “Come on. Let’s get another drink. I need something to wash that feeling away.”
“Fine,” I started, “but I’m not finished with this conversation. We’re coming back to this eventually.”
She waived me off, ordering a round of shots when she got to the bar. After we all threw them back, we headed back to the dance floor.
The flood of alcohol running through my veins made everything brighter, more bubbly, andlighter.I let loose, swaying my hips back and forth to the beat of the music, only coming back to myself when I felt a warm body slide in behind me, wrapping an arm around my waist.
“There’s my girl,” Barrett’s deep voice murmured against my ear. I instantly relaxed against him, leaning my head on his chest so I could look up at him.
My girl.Yeah, I was. I smiled.
“Hi,” I said, feeling cozy and content in his arms as he rocked me in time with the music.
