Kenzie and Brett shared a look before she shook her head. “I’m trying to get pregnant.”

“You are? Wow.” They hadn’t even been married for a year yet. It may’ve sounded sudden, but I kind of understood their rush. I smiled at her, “I think you’ll make a wonderful mom, Kenz.”

She slipped onto the stool opposite me while Brett popped two slices of bread in the toaster. Reaching across the counter, she took my hand. “That means a lot.” Her eyes glistened, but the grin on her lips told me she was happy. “We haven’t told anyone yet, we don’t want to jinx it. It’s just we missed out on so many years and if things hadn’t gone down the way they had, we might’ve had a house full of kids by now.”

I brought the mug to my lips and almost groaned at that first hit of caffeine. “I’m super happy for you guys.” Setting the mug down, I leveled them with a stare. “If you guys are trying for a baby, I should probably stay somewhere else…I didn’t pack my noise-canceling headphones.”

Brett chuckled as he placed the toasted bread on the counter. “We’ll be really quiet.” Cocking my head, I narrowed my eyes. His chuckle morphed into laughter. “Promise.”

I wasn’t convinced, and I told them exactly that. Brett took it upon himself to explain to me the ways he’d keep Kenzie quiet. It wasn’t long until my cheeks ached, and tears streamed down my face from laughing too much.

That moment right there in my friends’ kitchen, I knew coming to Willow Creek had been exactly what I needed.
