"No, not just like that. I realize it won't be as simple, but at some point, you're going to want to put your heart back out there."
Leaning back, he folded his arms in front of his chest. I saw the challenge in his body language before I heard it in his voice. "Since you've become such an expert, I gather you've told Hailey exactly how you feel. Gave her your heart and all that?"
He'd thrown down the gauntlet, and I accepted by pushing to my feet. "You're right. I think I should go do it now."
His eyes narrowed. "You should."
"I'm going." Bending down, I gripped his shoulder and squeezed. "Thanks for this, man." And then I was off; walking back to the main house as fast as my feet would allow. A plan forming with each hurried step I took.
First, I was going to brush my teeth and remove the stink of beer from my mouth then I was going to knock on Hailey's door and lay my heart at her feet.
By the time I ascended the porch steps, my heart was thumping about excitedly. I almost tripped over my feet as my steps became even more scrambled. Unfortunately, my mission came to an abrupt halt when I barreled through the front door and almost crashed into my father.
"We need to talk, son."
