I laugh deeply. “No.”

“Ah—”

“Stop guessing. Say you choose to accept the mission.”

I want her to. It will be hot to both be building up the tension and desire all day until it’s time for more. I love to play like this and hope she wants it … but maybe after last night’s intensity, she won’t be game.

She bites her lip, staring deeply into my eyes. “Okay. I accept.”

I smile, leaning down to press a kiss to her forehead. “Let me get coffee going and grab the materials.” I slide out of bed. “You need to be showered and dressed before I brief you on the mission.”

“Materials?” I cock my head, but Jake just leaves his room with a devilish grin. I make my way to his primary bathroom with my overnight bag in hand and start the shower.

The warm water runs over me, and I think about the shower I took after meeting Jake, after the fire. The emotional release. Now I could nearly cry happy tears. I’m at peace, yet giddy. Our casual evening was perfect, even though it was emotional.

He’s perfect.

We’ve already discussed what this would look like: one date a week, plus a kiss each night. That can work. I want that. I should just do it. Stop being one foot in and one foot out. Dive in.

But what if diving in means drowning?

I flick off the water, pushing the thought aside. I quickly towel off and slide on my summer dress, curiosity about this mission outweighing everything else.

“Beautiful,” I hear his voice say and look over seeing Jake leaning on the door frame with two coffee cups in hand. Jake’s eyes are glued to me, checking me out as he steps closer. Then a smirk grows on his face as he stands behind me, setting the coffee cups on the counter.

“What?” I ask, watching him in the mirror. His eyes flick between mine, teasing. “What?” I repeat, feeling a heat creep up my neck.

His hands find my thighs, giving them a light squeeze. “I like your curly hair.”

“Full glory today.”

“When you’re done with your hair and makeup, the briefing will take place at the dining room table.” He picks up one of the cups and places a kiss on the top of my head. “No rush.”

“This is a lot of build-up.”But I’m loving it.

I quickly get ready, too curious about what’s in store for me … and us. Entering the kitchen, Jake is already seated at the dining table. “When did you shower?” I ask, seeing him now in a polo and khaki shorts.

“A few minutes ago.” He gestures toward the small gift bag sitting in front of him. My stomach flutters as I take a seat and reach for it. Opening it, I let out a soft giggle.

“A vibrator forcouples,” I read the packaging, saying “couples” with a questioning edge.

“After today, it might be a little while until I see you again. I thought we could still have some fun together even when I can’t see you.”

I’m that emoji—the one with the hearts and a smitten smile. He’s thoughtful and sweet. My mind drifts to my first mission.

“When did you get this?” I ask, beaming at him.

“Yesterday.”

Examining the packaging, I notice there is an app that controls the device. “Jake,” I murmur low, almost breathless. “What is the mission?”

“Building you up at the party.”

My breath catches. “You want me to wear it …there?”

“Yes.”
