“Same.”

His amazing gray eyes—my favorite color for eyes—fixed me in their gaze. Could he get any sexier? Those entrancing eyes bored into mine, then he smirked with lips so full and sensuous, it should be a crime to be that damned gorgeous. “Well, think it over. You have my number, and it’s my personal cell.” With that, he left my office.

I collapsed into my chair just before Xavier came barging in.

“What the fuck, dude!” he yelled, throwing his hands in the air in his exasperation.

I shrugged. “Look, I can’t explain what just happened. All I know is I couldn’t think straight until I had him inside me.”

“Oh man, fuck, dude… spare me the details.”

“You asked,” I reminded him.

“That was some unnatural shit, Adrian. What if it happens again?”

“I don’t know. I’ve been around shifters before and never had that reaction. As a matter of fact, no supernal being ever made me feel like that. It was as if the universe wanted us to… to…”

“Fuck like rabbits?” Xavier supplied.

I nodded. “But it was more than sex. I felt something when he entered me. Like a connection that rooted deep inside me, pulling him closer into me. It felt like we were becoming one.” I shook my head. “I can’t really explain what the sensation felt like. I’m sure it had nothing to do with his shaft piercing, not that that didn’t help.”

“Spare. Me. The. Details,” Xavier whined.

I ran my hands over my face, then picked up his card, reading his name again and the number. “Whatever he’s into, I think it’s too dangerous for us. I need to keep my distance from him at all cost.”

“Well, I don’t disagree with you there. Although, I wouldn’t have mind having a romp with that hot female assistant of his,” Xavier said. “Her ass was award-winning.”

“Spare me the details,” I shot back, then rose from my chair. I walked past Xavier as he chuckled at my joke. “I’m going to read up on whatever this might be. Don’t wait up.”

“Yeah, you do that. I’ll close up shop.”

I thanked him, then walked into the back where my little studio apartment was. I saved money living where I worked. Xavier had the other studio apartment on the other side of the office, and not having to commute did help save on gas. I took a quick shower, but before I did, I inhaled the scent of Sage’s cologne on my skin and it smelled almost as good as the man himself. After my shower, I took my grimoire out of its secret hiding place under the floorboard beneath my bed.

The front of it had the dragon on it as an emblem, wings and fire looking magnificent, just like Sage’s tattoo. There were about twenty-five pages, thick, ancient parchment paper, and about twelve were stuck together by magic. The binding of the pages was sewn together with leather threading, and all the spells it contained were of light magic. Magic I could use to help people, but the pages that were stuck together always confused me. Like, why did the book hide those pages, and I wondered what spells were on them? I did notice the pages seemed to come apart at the corners, which was odd as it hadn’t been like that before. I dared not try to pull them apart. I didn’t want to damage the book, but I found that interesting. I flipped through the book reading every available page, but nothing in it could reveal what had happened to Sage and me.

Was this destiny? Could you run from destiny?

CHAPTER FOUR

“Sage, you were quiet all the way home. I’m worried. What happened in there? I mean, I can smell what happened, but what really happened?” Shi asked.

I plopped down on the sofa and undid the button of my suit jacket, letting it fall open, exposing my chest. I had removed my shirt in the car and used it to clean myself off. I couldn’t help but think about how wonderful Adrian’s fingers had felt on my skin, almost hot to the touch. As a shifter, we tended to run hot anyway with all the raw, animal power running through our blood. But when his hands touched my flesh, I felt like something inside of me ignited. Jesus, what was going on between us? I never, and I mean never, lose control and at that moment, I literally had none.

I stared forward out of my floor-to-ceiling length windows that made up one full wall of my condo. Of course, the windows were custom made, bulletproof and spelled with a protection ward just like my cars. A man in my line of work couldn’t ever be too careful. Especially now that I was on someone’s hitlist.

“Sage, are you okay?” Shi asked again.

“I don’t know, Shi,” I said plainly. My thoughts went back to Adrian and the way his skin felt against mine. It was… heavenly.

“This was your first time meeting him, right?” Nadia asked as she sat next to me. “Sage, was it?” she repeated.

I blinked, coming out of the trance I’d settled into just thinking about Adrian. “What?” I asked, because I couldn’t remember the question Nadia had asked me.

“Wow, whatever happened in that office must have been truly magical,” Shi said.

“Oh, I don’t doubt magic was at play. I felt it coursing through me, driving me to barge into his office and claim him as mine.”

“And is he yours?” Nadia asked.
