I pursed my lips. “I… I don’t know. It’s not like I bit his neck when I came. That would be my idea of fully claiming him. But something happened. Something on a higher level than a shifter’s claim on a mate. It was like all I could see in the world was him and nothing else mattered but him.”
Nadia patted my thigh. “Looks like you need to look in your grimoire for some answers.”
I rolled my eyes. “That useless thing can’t even help me find out who’s fucking with me. Besides, I have never read any spell that can make two complete strangers do what we did. And another thing, almost half the pages are stuck together in that raggedy motherfucker and it only has twenty-five pages to begin with. I’ve rarely found it helpful,” I fussed. I was beyond frustrated and the half a grimoire I owned had failed me with only some dark spells for defense.
“I still say, take a look,” Shi said.
“I guess it won’t hurt. You ladies have fun. I’m going to bed.” I rose and walked away into my bedroom. Some nights, they stayed with me, sharing one of my bedrooms. On other nights, Shi and Nadia went to their own condo across from mine. I walked to a random painting in my bedroom, moving it out of the way. My grimoire was hidden in the safe behind it. I pulled it out and looked at it. The book didn’t have a front cover, because the other half of the book was missing, but the back cover had an angel on it. A representation of light magic, but all the spells I could get to were shit for kids in my opinion. Not even curses were in the book. The few parlor tricks I’d learned from the book, I displayed in public where other supernal beings could see. It gave me the clout I needed to keep people out of my shit.
But someone out there was challenging me. Someone who wasn’t afraid of the fact that I knew magic and was a lion king shifter to boot. And by the way, they were keeping themselves hidden. They knew a thing or two about magic as well and were more advanced than me. If this was a challenge for my territory, who could it be? One just didn’t ask other mob bosses if they were out to get them. It showed weakness that one wouldn’t know who their enemies were. I needed to keep these attacks under wraps.
I flipped the book over and looked at the angel again. So many times, I didn’t really pay attention to it, but now… it did seem significant. It was a perfect match to the angel birthmark on Adrian’s very plump and incredibly hot ass. That couldn’t be a coincidence nor the way he seemed so fascinated with my tattoo. As if he’d seen it somewhere before. He may not want to help me, but I thought I wouldn’t be able to give him the choice to refuse me. I needed Adrian’s help. I was certain of it. And if these dragon and angel marks meant anything, I had to explore it.
I flipped though my grimoire and just as I had expected, I found nothing about love spells or sex spells. I flipped another page and found something curious. Usually, the pages I couldn’t get to were stuck together so tight, but right then, the edges had peeled away a little, but not enough to fully separate the pages. Okay, that was weird. Just what in the hell was going on? I placed my book back into the safe, then took a shower before climbing into bed. It was going to be hard for me to sleep with Adrian’s scent embedded so deeply underneath my skin. Not even the soap and water could remove it and I was glad about that. I found his scent comforting; it certainly made my cock rise.
I fisted my shaft after pouring a generous amount of lube into my palm. I replayed the events of the night. The moment I’d walked into his office and saw him for the first time. God, he was beautiful. He made every man I’d ever met a distant memory. The fever that flared up inside of me had me reeling. My cock throbbed to be inside of him. I couldn’t resist him even if I wanted to, and kissing him meant everything. Every fiber in my body told me he was mine and I was his. But did that even make sense?
I closed my eyes and focused on his face as I fucked him. His flush cheeks, the soft pants, and when he came, how his eyes rolled up in his head and his back arched, pressing his chest against mine. The vision of his pleasure sent me over the edge and I cried out as I came. My cock shot jets of cum all over my thighs, hand, and stomach as I quaked like a stiff board in the bed. Holy fuck, even the memory of him was intense! I let my dick go and lay still in the bed. The coolness of the room was relaxing to me and as I calmed down from my orgasm, I felt myself drift off to sleep. The last thing I saw was Adrian’s face, and that was who I continued to dream about.
CHAPTER FIVE
There he was again, Sage, walking up to me, carrying what looked to be half a book. A book with a back cover, but no front. And in my own hand, I had my half of the grimoire, and the type of paper inside matched his. Closer, we brought the two pieces of the book together and once the pages touched, a brightness so blinding in my mind forced my eyes to open. My heart was pounding in my chest as I panted. I looked around my surroundings to see I was not in my office with Sage and two halves of a grimoire, but in my bedroom, still in bed and sweating as if I’d just run a marathon.
It seemed that whatever had come over me the night before when we met wasn’t done with me. And maybe it wasn’t done with Sage either? Did he dream about me like I’d dreamt about him? What did it even mean? Ugh, I didn’t need this new shit in my life. When it rained, it fucking poured. I climbed out of bed because I had to start the day, even when I’d rather curl up and forget just how fucked up my life was.

“Ahh fuck, another damn bill I can’t pay,” I grumbled as I looked through the day’s mail. I needed work and fast or both Xavier and I were going to be facing eviction notices.
“Any good news?” Xavier asked as he filled up the coffee maker.
“Depends on what you consider good news.”
“Any free money offers in that pile of mail?”
“Oh, if that’s what you mean, then no. There isn’t any good news.” I tossed the mail on top of the stack already sitting on my desk and plopped down in my chair. I ran my fingers over my face because I had so much on my mind. On top of my financial situation, I had the mystery of Sage Tamir. I needed to know more about him. I turned on my laptop and typed his name in the browser just to see what would pop up. Several pages popped up and images of Sage shaking hands with politicians and society’s elite. Apparently, he was a very successful business man and owned several casinos, an auto shop, and his own hotels and a tower downtown. Well, he could certainly afford my services if I decided to take his case.
“Xavier, can you come in here?” I called out to my partner.
He entered and took a seat in front of my desk, then ran his hand through his shoulder-length black hair. His brown eyes regarded me with anticipation. Xavier was pretty damn handsome with an athletic build he was proud of. He was into martial arts and was teaching me what he knew, and knowing some moves had saved my ass from time to time. “What’s up?” he asked.
I took a deep breath, then let it out. “What was your impression of Mr. Tamir?”
He snorted. “Before or after his dick was in your ass?”
I snatched up a piece of junk mail off my desk and balled it up. I tossed it at Xavier, but he knew it was coming and slapped it back with expert precision. It bounced off my head and landed on the floor. We both laughed. The levity helped.
“Seriously, though, what did you think about him?” I asked again.
Xavier sighed and slouched a little in his seat. “The man has money and troubles to match. I think he’s a mobster and someone is trying to take him out for his territory. You said he was a shifter too, right?”
I nodded. “He also has a lot of legit businesses.”
“Not impressed. I’m sure they’re all fronts to launder his dirty money and keep the government off his back. The last thing he wants is a RICO case, I’m sure. Anyway, mobster, shifter, it’s all about territory for them and someone wants his badly.”
“Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking too.”
“Are you thinking about taking his case?”
