“Is he still in the county jail or did they move him to the big house?” I asked.

“That asshole is still in county awaiting trial.”

I nodded. “Okay, let’s go.”

~*~

We took Xavier’s car this time because mine refused to start. God, when it rained, it fucking poured. It didn’t take us too long to get to the county jail to speak with the asshole we came to see. After going through the whole security measures, only I was allowed inside to speak with Gregory. At first, I thought he would refuse, but he didn’t. I approached the chair where I’d been directed to go and on the other side of the very thick glass sat Gregory. He didn’t look to be as injured as I had expected. In fact, I thought the guards would have escorted me to his hospital bed, but the motherfucker was up and walking about like he hadn’t taken two bullets to his body. Made me wonder what was going on.

I snarled as he stared at me through the glass because he looked just as despicable as he had that fateful night. I sat down and he smiled at me, rotten teeth glistening with spit. God, the man was disgusting in every sense of the word. I picked up the phone on my end and he picked up the phone on his. “I didn’t want to have to come here, but I guess you know why I did?”

“Thought you saved the little girl, didn’t you? Thought you were a hero?” he asked, then laughed.

“What did you do to her?” I asked, ignoring his attempt to annoy me any more than he already had.

“Why should I tell you, fucker?”

“You’re already going to hell, what difference does it make?”

“Exactly. I made my bed and I’m lying in it. I have no incentive to tell you anything, now do I?” he asked, leaning forward a little.

As much as I hated to admit it, I didn’t really have anything to offer him. No way I’d break him out of jail even if I knew how. And he obviously didn’t have a conscience I could appeal to. Coming here was a mistake. “I don’t beg often and I’m not even asking you for much. Just tell me about the demon you allowed to take over the child’s body.”

He chuckled and shook his head. “It’s too late for you to save her.”

“True, but I can still save other people from it.”

He shrugged. “The demon will repay me for my loyalty, so I ain’t telling you shit.”

“Is that why you seem all healed? Did the demon do this?”

He smiled. “And more to come. It just wants to stretch its legs a bit. Have a little fun.”

“Which dark god did you conjure this demon from?”

“Oh, do you hear that?” he asked me.

“Hear what?”

“Me not telling you shit because I don’t give a fuck.” Again, he cackled and I wanted to kill him with my bare hands.

“Why did you even bother to agree to meet with me if you were going to be an asshole?”

“Because… I’m an asshole.” with that last remark, he hung up the phone, rose, and walked away, leaving me feeling like a fool for trying to have faith in the human race. I slammed the phone down and stood up to leave. It was easier getting out of the jailhouse than it was getting in, and I climbed into the passenger seat next to Xavier.

“I take it things didn’t go well in there,” he said after observing my sour mood.

“I hope he burns in hell,” I growled.

Xavier just sighed and started the car. “So, where to now?”

“Back home for now. Tonight, we need to go to the house where the parents were murdered. Maybe, I can find something there that might give me some answers. It will be best if we broke in under the cover of darkness.”

“Works for me.”

I was anxious for more than one reason. I wanted to see what had happened with the girl. But I also wanted answers about what had happened between Sage and I. Even now, I could still feel a longing for him. A need to be around him, to feel him, smell him. It was unnatural and natural at the same time. I didn’t explain myself to Xavier yet, because I couldn’t answer any of his questions if he asked them. Bottomline, I knew I was going to have to have another meeting with Mr. Sage Tamir, I just wondered if we’d be able to keep our clothes on the next time we were face to face?
