I reached over, rubbing his back, because it was the only thing I could do. We were both learning about each other and yet we still didn’t know each other. We just knew that we… I guess… belonged together. And forces throughout time had been trying to keep our two families and clans apart, but I didn’t know why and I didn’t think Adrian knew either. That was something the visions didn’t tell us.

I continued to rub his back. “Finding out that our two clans have been hunted for a thousand years is a little more than your usual mindfuck,” I said.

He sat up and I pulled my hand back. He reached over, taking a few Kleenex tissues from the box and began wiping his eyes.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

He nodded. “I’ll be fine.” He dried his face, then looked back at me. “Why us? Why does this book belong to us and why did it bring us together?”

“I’m just as lost as I was before I came here.” I stood up and paced the tiny office a bit, working the circulation back into my limbs. “I do feel more powerful. Do you?”

He nodded. “Oh yeah… I’m buzzing with power. I feel almost overloaded by it.”

I stopped pacing and pursed my lips. “Maybe that’s why the book brought us together. We’ve both been given great power. Maybe it was power that already belonged to us through our bloodlines. Our birthright.”

Adrian continued to flip through the grimoire. “I think you’re right. The book was separated to one day be brought back together, but it hadn’t ever happened until now.” He flipped through more pages, his pretty green eyes scanning over the words and ancient drawings. “This is amazing.”

I stood closer and looked at the book. “This spell is pretty dark,” I said.

“It is? How?” he asked.

I flipped back to one of the pages. “This one is about inflicting a curse. Can come in handy, I suppose.”

Adrian frowned. “I see it as healing a person with a cure.”

I looked at him and pointed to the page. “You don’t see the part about the curse being painful or deadly?”

He shook his head. “I’m looking right at it, but I don’t see anything about cursing people. Only healing them from what I suppose an illness or curse may be. Something about being inflicted with malevolence.”

I sat down in the chair, because my legs suddenly felt weak. “I don’t see that spell at all.” I frowned.

“So, we can be looking at the same page and get different spells from it.” Adrian looked at me. “Do you only see the dark magic spells?”

“Maybe, we haven’t really looked through the book together yet for me to know for sure.” I looked at him. “But as for the dark spells, in some legends, the dragon does represent the power of darkness. One of the reasons why they were always the beasts to slay by gallant knights. Perhaps, that’s why.”

He cocked his eyebrow. “What does that say about you?” he asked me.

I looked at him in silence for a few seconds. “Do you really want to know?”

He licked his lips. Those lips that held me captive as I watched his pink tongue seducing me as it wet his tender flesh. “I… I don’t know.”

“In any case, I think we can both agree that this book belongs to us. It brought us together for a reason,” I said.

“But why?”

“Fuck if I know, but I think that’s something we’re going to have to figure out together. I do know that I need your help. I know you said you wouldn’t take my case, but I need you to and if this book is any indication, you might not have another choice.”

Adrian turned back to the book and flipped through the pages, his pretty eyes scanning over the details. “Can you see this spell?” he asked.

I looked. “It’s a spell that can pull a demon spirit from a body. Looks complicated.”

Adrian nodded and smiled. “I see that same spell.”

“So, some of these spells are for me, and some are for you, and some are for us.” I was reeling from everything that had just happened and the knowledge of this book. Why did it exist and why was it so powerful? Why was it linked to Adrian and me?

Adrian was still looking through the book, his mouth opened in awe. “The spells contained in this book could make us the most powerful mages in the world.”

“Holy Shit,” we said at the same time. Our eyes connected and I was sure the same light bulb that went off in my head, went off in his as well.
