I shrugged. “I know some things, but not everything. I tend to try to keep my distance from the supernal.”
“You’re a mage, you are one of us, supernal,” Shi said. “Best you accept that, especially since you’re damn near mated to Sage.”
I frowned. “What do you mean I’m mated to Sage?”
“Almost,” she clarified.
“Okay, explain that.”
“You two had sex.”
“And?”
“And I bet he knocked your socks off,” she said, smirking.
Yeah, he did, but that was beside the point. “So what? Besides, I’m sure I’m not the only person Sage has had sex with.”
She laughed. “Oh, no… you certainly are not.”
Okay, that stung. I mean, he was almost a century and a half old. I was sure he’d dipped his dick in many holes. I just didn’t like knowing about it. Was that jealousy? “How am I almost mated to Sage?” I asked, hoping she’d answer the damn question before the elevator reached its destination.
She sighed. “You’re not his first or even his thousandth. However, you are the first he’s ever fucked whose scent is still lingering on him after the showers he’s taken. I’m sure he can smell you on him, it’s probably driving him crazy.”
Okay, that was all news to me. “Crazy?”
“Also, his scent is all over you and I can tell that you took showers too.”
“But we’ve been around each other all day,” I pointed out. It only made sense that Sage’s scent would be on me.
She shook her head. “There is a difference in those kinds of scents. The intimacy levels are very distinct. He must be dying to claim you completely. To make his mark permanent within you.”
I wasn’t so sure I liked the way that sounded, or what it even meant. “Well, I’m going to make sure I do what I can so that he lives. Then, I’ll ask him myself.”
She gave a curt nod. “Good.”
We were almost at the top level. And with each passing of a story, I was growing more nervous, not sure what to expect once we reached Salino. “Maybe we should have brought more of your pride with us.”
“Scared?” she asked.
“Hell yeah.”
“Dude, you’re some bad ass mage, right? You two were neck deep in that book for hours. I’m sure you’ve learned something to protect yourself from threats, no?” Shi asked.
I took a deep breath, because she was right. I knew some spells that could put a hurting on a vampire. For one thing, I could throw ice spears and I could make myself invisible for a little while, like five minutes before I got a bit tired. That spell took me a whole hour to learn, both of them.
“You’re right. I do know a thing or two,” I said. It was time I got my confidence up. I didn’t want to go into this meeting giving the vampire all the leverage.
The doors opened once we reached the top level and two huge men were waiting for us. “Boss is waiting,” one of the men said. They were each wearing black suits with black turtlenecks and shoes. Their look and their size was very intimidating even if they weren’t vampires. One was bald and the other had his long hair tied in a ponytail. Both had a gold earring in one of their ears.
“Well, take us to him,” Shi demanded.
The one who had spoken cocked his head for us to follow him, then he led the way. I took in my surroundings as we made our way through the rather lavish condo with its expensive furnishings and artwork everywhere. Lots of fancy French designs that straddled the line between gaudy and classic elegance to me. As we made our way through the home, we passed others vampires and humans, both male and female. I could tell which ones were vampires and how many were humans. The vampires had an aura I could sense even stronger now that Sage and I had bonded with the magic of the grimoire. I had never been around these many vampires in my life. We found ourselves standing in front of a set of large double doors. Our escort knocked and the door opened, and a tall vampire appeared and looked like he could have been the slimmer twin to our escort, their features were so similar and he was also wearing a black suit with matching turtleneck. Must be the uniform for security.
“Hey Vince,” the new guy said, then looked at Shi and me. “Do come in.”
Vince nodded and turned, but didn’t walk away. Instead, he crossed his arms over his chest and stood on the outside of the door. Once Shi and I crossed the threshold, the double doors were closed behind us by the vampire who had let us in. The only other person I could see in the room was sitting behind a large redwood desk that looked just as expensive as everything else in this house. I suspected he was Salino Laurent. I must say, the photos hadn’t done him justice, because sweet baby Jesus, he was gorgeous!
He was wearing a deep red suit with a fancy ass black silk vest with intricate beading on it. He was also wearing a white silk tie with a beautiful black and red design that you could tell matched his suit perfectly. His long, blond hair was draped over his shoulders in cascading waves and it looked to be waist-length. His eyes were a mixture of gold and green, such a rare color and completely outstanding. I knew when one became a vampire, their eyes changed. His eyes were originally green, but now there was gold mixed in the irises. I could tell his suit was tailor-made and fit his slim, yet very agile form like a glove. I could feel his power rolling off him and I knew that he was old, at least over five centuries.
