Before I was ready to let go, the blood was snatched away from me and I growled in frustration. “More!”
“Easy, Sage, you shall have more,” said a voice with a heavy French accent. It was a voice that sounded familiar… Salino? “Nakago, bring the human.”
I wiped at my eyes, trying to clear my vision, which was still a bit cloudy. I could smell several scents in the room, feel their auras too. Vampires… shifters… and two humans. Only one of the humans’ scent was growing more pungent with sweat. But what I also found alluring was the scent of his blood and fear as it drew closer. My chest began to heave as a Japanese vampire dragged him to me.
“Don’t let him kill him,” I heard someone say. Was it Adrian?
“Oh, he’s going to kill him. The first kill is important for a vampire. We are predators, after all,” I heard the French vampire say. The more he spoke, the more I was certain it was Salino. Why was he here and oh God, give me more blood!
“I will not let him kill that human.” It was Adrian speaking… the connection I felt with him was also strong.
“Stay out of this, mage,” Salino said. “Besides, this human is a child molester and murderer. The police couldn’t catch him and I did before he was about to kill another child. I was going to feed on him myself. Bring him all the pain he deserved, but I decided to gift wrap him for my newest child. Don’t shed any tears for this trash.”
The human was thrust into my hands and my gums ached slightly as my canines grew. They weren’t the same as my canines I had when I was a shifter, they were sharper and I cut my bottom lip with one of them.
“Feed,” came the command from Salino.
Like instinct, as if I couldn’t stop myself, I buried my face into the human’s neck and bit. More blood squirted into my mouth and I swallowed as quickly as I could, moaning in the most intense pleasure I’d ever experienced in my whole life.
“Slow down, savor the blood, see his memories,” said Salino.
I could feel an impulse take over my instincts and force me to slow my draw on the blood. With that, the pleasure actually increased and along with the pleasure, I did begin to see visions. Scattered images of the human’s past. His childhood, his teenage years, his adulthood. It all flashed before me, but not in chronological order. Like pieces of a puzzle I had to put together. But the human was tragic and evil and he’d hurt at least three children from what I could tell. His death was deserved.
“I can’t believe this shit,” I heard a female say. It had to be Shi, her attitude was hard to mistake and with the more blood I drank, the more I became aware of my surroundings.
The heart ceased and I fed a little bit more before there was nothing left to drain. I pulled back and felt fingers on my chin, lifting my face upward. I opened my eyes to see Salino Laurent smiling down at me.
“Oh, those are some beauties,” he said.
I growled and dropped the human to smack his hand away. “What the fuck is going on?” I snapped.
I looked around now to see who all was in my bedroom. Nadia was standing beside Adrian and Shi was standing near my bed. Salino was rolling down his sleeve as he stood at the foot of the bed and the other vampire… I wasn’t so sure of his name, was standing near the door.
“Somebody better start fucking talking. What the fuck happened to me?”
“What is the last thing you remember?” Shi asked me as she approached the bed. She sat down beside me, placing her hand gently on my knee.
I looked down at the human whose blood I apparently drank, which wasn’t normal at all. He was pale, his eyes were still open, but void of all life. A life that I had taken and didn’t feel guilty about. Killing wasn’t new to me, but when I looked at Adrian, I could tell that he was conflicted. The frown and look of concern in his expression spoke volumes. Salino was putting on his suit jacket and I still didn’t have the answers I needed, like why was one of my sworn enemies in my bedroom?
“Sage?” Shi called my name, drawing my attention back to her. “What was the last thing you remember?”
I ran my hands over my head as I struggled to think back to my last memory. I looked down to see that I was shirtless, but the scent of my dried blood on my pants was unmistakable. It helped jar my memory. “Fuck… those sons of bitches fucking shot me,” I snarled as I remembered the bullet going into my stomach. God, it had fucking hurt like hell. Never felt any pain like that in my life.
“You were poisoned,” Shi said. “Adrian helped save you, but it wasn’t easy.”
“Poisoned?” I asked, my gaze going from Shi to Adrian.
“Look, just give me the fucking facts. Stop dolling it out like I’m some child that can’t handle bad news,” I snapped, because I still needed to know why Salino was in my home.
“Basically, you were dying,” Adrian said, taking several steps closer to me, but keeping his distance from the corpse.
“Nadia, get the body out of here, please,” I said.
Nadia nodded and walked over to the dead human, lifting him up with ease. “Are you okay?” she asked me.
“I’m fine… just want answers,” I said.
She nodded, then walked out of my bedroom with the body to get rid of it the way we tended to do. We had a number of ways and none of them ever resulted in the police finding our dirty laundry. I motioned for Shi to give me some room and she did, scooting down farther on the bed, enough for me to swing my legs over the edge so I was properly sitting up.
