Xavier’s gaze burned into mine, but he nodded. “Not a bad idea.”
“Excellent. Shi, if you would,” I said.
She smirked, but nodded. If there was one person enjoying the show, it was her. “I’m sure he’ll change his mind once he sees everything and all this bravado will have been for nothing.”
Xavier rolled his eyes, but left with Shi. I returned my attention to Adrian. “So, what’s all this?” I asked, pointing to the bag on the cocktail table.
“Things we need for a few spells. I have almost everything I need for the locator spell, but the spell to restore her soul requires something the shop owner didn’t have. She told me that I could get the missing ingredients on the black market, though,” Adrian said, which piqued my interest.
“What is that?” I asked.
“It’s called the Wolf’s Scent and Deareth Calsme in the book. Meaning the ‘Calm of Death’. Basically, it’s a fancy way to say the heart of a griezel.”
“And the Wolf’s Scent?”
“The cremated ash of a werewolf,” Adrian replied.
I pursed my lips. I could only imagine how much that was going to cost to obtain on the black market and that was even if they were already for sale. “Have you looked into it?”
“Not yet. I wanted to run it by you first,” he said. “I mean, if we have to purchase something off the black market, well… that’s your territory,” he said, pointing at me.
I half snorted and half chuckled. “Why? Because I’m mafia?”
He rolled his eyes. “No, Sage, because you’re rich. Lord knows I can’t afford it. But since you bring that up, have you ever bought things off the black market?”
I smirked. “Not really. I know how to get on the dark web, or in the case of a body part, the deep web. I, from time to time, have sold things on it. Business. If I need someone’s heart, I…” I trailed off before I stepped into dirty territory with him. I still wanted to ease Adrian into my world.
“You kill that person and take it?” he asked, finishing my point.
“Only if they have it coming.” Well, he went there, so I joined him.
He was quiet for a little while and I could tell he was mulling over my response.
“I’m going to eat this pizza we bought. Y’all over there are letting it get cold,” Jewel said.
I turned to see that she was holding several boxes of pizza and from the delicious smell, I could tell it came from Tony and Marie’s restaurant. They didn’t have the best pasta dishes, but they were spot on when it came to the pizza pie.
“I hope you got some meat lovers,” I said, walking toward her to grab myself a slice.
“Supremes, my king,” she said.
I shrugged. “Good enough.”
“Back to those ingredients. We need them because I’m not going to let this girl die,” Adrian said.
I opened the box of pizza and pulled a slice free, took a bite, and savored the flavor. “You save her, then what? Her family is dead. We discussed this before. May be more humane to let her soul rest,” I said after I swallowed.
Adrian shook his head. “She has family, Sage. An aunt and uncle in Connecticut with cousins. The aunt already put out a reward for any information that could lead to the whereabouts of her niece. She has a life waiting for her and I’m not going to let some malevolent spirit steal it from her.”
“How are we going to change the evidence pointing at her for her parents’ murder?” I asked.
“You’re a vampire now, Sage. Also, we’re two powerful mages. I’m sure changing memories and getting rid of evidence is something easy for you,” Adrian said. “Hell, I bet you had no problem getting rid of evidence without magic just because you’re a powerful mob boss.”
I smiled, because he was right. “You like that, don’t you?”
“No,” he scoffed.
I laughed. “Yeah, you do. You’re a little turned on by the fact that I’m a bad guy, right?”
